Hi, I submitted my SIR to UCI because I got accepted and I was waitlisted for UCD. I just got off the waitlist and I don't know which one I want to go to yet. I don't mind paying the extra $100 for the UCD SIR but I think I just need a week or two to think it out even more. Does submitting my SIR to UCD as well as UCI jeopardize my chance at UCI if in the end, I decide to go there?

(Oh this post is on behalf of my friend. So if you've seen me around the UCI thread saying I'm waitlisted, I am. This isn't my question :))

There is really nothing wrong with submitting more than one SIR except that you lose your deposit and some might say that it’s “unethical”. But, if you are on the waiting list for a school, that school usually requires you to SIR to another school just in case. So no, it doesn’t jeopardize your chances.

Wait, so is the question “can I SIR to Davis although I already SIR’ed to Irvine and wait a week or two to decide which school I want to go to?” If yes, then the answer is no! You can’t SIR to two schools. So your friend pretty much has until the deadline that Davis gave her to decide which school she wants to go to. If she decides to go to Davis, she must cancel her SIR to Irvine before accepting the SIR to Davis.

Really? But it seems like a lot of people submit more than 1 SIR. Me, for instance, have already SIR’d to 3 schools >_> Because first I got into UCSB, then UCSD took me off the waitlist, but then Davis took me off the waitlist. But I really want to go to Irvine. I’m cancelling my UCSB and UCSD but nothing has happened to me about revoking my admissions for any of the schools.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying that you can accept more than one, as long as you cancel the others. Because my friend isn’t sure which one to go but would definitely have their decision by mid-May. Is that okay? :/

You’re definitely not allowed to do it. Whether or not they catch people who do it is a different story.

I mean, there are still people on the waitlists for these schools. Every SIR you submit is preventing another person from getting off the waitlist.

Yea I understand that which is why I cancelled my SIR for UCSD and I am mailing out my SIR cancellation to UCSB. But I’ve read that UCs do not really communicate with one another so it would be hard to catch someone submitting multiple SIRs.

I guess it’s unlikely they’ll communicate, but I wouldn’t risk my college acceptances over it. I think your friend would be taking a huge risk by doing it.

Hm, I just read the UCD accepting the SIR of the waitlist thing. And it doesn’t say anything about how I’m not allowed to submit more than one SIR.

When I try to look up submitting multiple SIRs online, it doesn’t lead me to any definite sources like any UC websites or anything. I’m reading all over Davis’ site and it doesn’t say anything about submitting multiple SIRs. I understand it’s a matter of ethics, but besides that, am I allowed to submit more than 1?

It’s definitely not allowed. However, if you were in the position that required you to submit multiple SIRs (waitlists), then you’ll be fine (you can typically fight for anything to happen in the UC system…). Once the admission period is over, make sure to cancel the SIRs as soon as possible. Once it’s cancelled, you should be fine.
