Submitting music porfolios as supplements

  1. I plan to send my instrument playing recordings to the colleges I am applying, but am confused by the instructions of some colleges. One college requires unedited video of no more than 10 min long. If the piece is over 10 min long, obviously I need to cut off last chunk, but will that be considered “editing”? I plan to email this to the specific college’s admission office, but I thought I ask here first.

  2. Some colleges specifically ask for videos, some audios, some just music recordings. I am a bit baffled about submitting audios (don’t the colleges want to know who is playing?) If it is not specified, will it be advisable to submit videos?

  1. Not exactly sure if cutting it off short is considered editing. I think you need to fit all your pieces into the 10 minute time frame so cutting off the last chunk wouldn't be good either.
  2. If college doesn't ask, then I would recommend just do a video. It is the safer route as (like you said) it eliminates any suspicion that somebody was playing for you.

I would ask this question in the Music Major forum. They will give you the most accurate answer and probably have some great tips too.

Music major usually needs audition, not just a supplement. No editing means one take and no manipulation (merging clips and sound track, audio editing, etc). Clipping the ends are not considered editing.
