For most top schools I know that you have to submit the SAT and SAT IIs or ACT with writing. When I took the ACT, I thought that since I am going to be submitting by SAT and SAT IIs anyways, I didn't need to take it with writing. I received a great score but now I am confused as to whether these top schools will even consider my ACT score since I took it without writing. I have emailed the admissions offices of a few schools and I am waiting for their replies but I was hoping someone with experience about this could respond beforehand. If it's the case that these schools won't take my ACT score, and I go back to retake my ACT but with writing this time, would they still look at the previous test without writing?

It is required for most Ivies to take the ACT with writing and I do not believe they would consider a score without the writing simply due to regulations. However, if you did retake the ACT, your old ACT would not negatively affect your admissions.

Thanks for the reply. It sucks that my 35 on the ACT doesn’t even amount to anything now but I guess I’ll just try to shoot for a 36 on the June ACT.

Yes, we did the same thing last year and realized the ACT without writing wasn’t worth much at all. Very disappointing to my daughter (who got a 32 and was ecstatic and was sure it was a fluke and wouldn’t be able to ever get that high again). Well, it turns out her 34 on the math portion was a fluke (which we kind of knew she had
gotten really lucky there), but she worked extra hard on the science and brought it up. Her goal was to
try and get the 32 again and she got a 33 composite. Good luck in keeping your 35! If you get lower, I would go ahead and send both scores to the schools.

What was your SAT score?
