Hey guys! New here, have a pretty big question.
I'm currently attending a community college for my first semester of college, but I'd like to transfer to a 4-year University for Spring of 2013.

My high school grades were decent (3.15 GPA), I actually got into a lot of colleges that I applied to, and I also achieved a good SAT score (1890).
However, I was addicted to a substance for 5 years. This took an enormous tole on myself and my family. Today, I am very proud to say I have over a year of sobriety, but the past years of my life have been a very, very hard struggle. When it came time to apply to college (fall of my senior year) I honestly was not in a position to live on campus, nor did I care to. It was much too early in my sobriety, I had so many other things to deal with.
I missed the first 3 months of my senior year because of this disease.

I'm applying for transfer for the Spring 2013 semester. At that point I will have over a year and a half of sobriety and feel I am ready to live on a college campus.

My question is this: I have to write a transfer essay, reasons why I want to transfer to said school(s), etc.
I feel as though I should include my personal struggle with addiction in my essay, because it has been the single largest motivation for what I want to do with my life, but I'm not sure how the college would take it.

I could leave it out, but it truly is a huge part of my life, it changed me forever.

After seeing the absolutely horrible things addiction does to people, and experiencing some of those for myself, all I want to do in life is somehow help those struggling to get better.

So, what should I do? Should I include my addiction. So many things I do in my life today involve my struggle with addiction (volunteer drug counselor, speaking at high schools, etc.)
I'm just so unsure of what to do. Anyone have an opinion, or any personal experience with the subject as it relates to college?

Thanks for reading, looking forward to the responses. Thanks for the help.
