I plan to live on the subtance free dorm, and I also need more information

what?? 10 char

My friend is the the SF hall in FT. He likes the people he met but also does not like how they dont party. They are typically less social, quiet, and dont like to go out. But there are cool ppl it just depends on what you want, and what kind of student you want to be.

Less social and quiet? Really? My friend who lives on the substance free floor of francisco torres says that people still go out and party..they just don't drink lol...I guess it depends on who you talk to. Also, I hear that the SF floors usually don't fill up so there are people who are "not" substance free that end up having to live on those floors.

that is very true...but if you go to the other dorms and halls that are not SF you will know what I am talking about. Its still fun, they still go out, you just dont have ppl getting wasted in all the dorms surrounding you. I noticed the level of activity in the SF halls is less too.

For those worried about "too much pressure to go out and drink" etc., it isnt necessary to sign up for a subst-free dorm to aviod it. Substance free is for kids who don't plan on going out to drink even on their own accord (pressure not being an issue at all -- they just have no desire to drink).

The reason its unnecessary to sign up for subst. free if you sort-of want that drug-free lifestyle? When you fill out roomate preferences for housing, some of the questions ask if you like to live a substance-free lifestyle, if you smoke, etc. The substance-free halls are designed more to the kids who have no desire to be involved in the drug scene whatsoever, be it from pressure or their own choices. It's a lifestyle committed to being with people who share that same mindset, and its totally respected by the other students.

I personally do not smoke (AT ALL, not cigars, anything), and rarely ever drink, but I don't need to sign up for the subst-free. I'll just fill out on the roomate questionnarie that I don't smoke (and want a roomate who does not smoke either) and I like to live drug-free, and they do their best to pair me up with someone who matches that. That way I'm not worried about weed and cigarettes in my room and pressure to go drink and get high, but I'm also not surrounding myself with the kids who don't care much for the party scene at all (because the party scene is something I am interested in). If I want to go to the party scene, I can go to it without having it always come to me.

The kids on the substance-free floor are not, by any means, the laughing stock of the school -- the kids at UCSB are truly pretty accepting. If you don't want to drink, no one is going to make you or care that you don't. People can respect that alot of kids don't want to be in that scene at all, so if your worried about image from signing up for subst-free -- dont be. Its seriously not a big deal. Keep in mind, besides your closest roomates, 95% of the school has no idea where you live anyway.

So having said all of that, if substance free is for you, don't sweat it -- I considered it as well. You'll have a great time being with like-minded people and not ever feel pressured into something you don't want to do. Just know that its not necessary to maintain a drug-free lifestyle =)

That's a good strategy I guess, but that is what I tried being a non-drinker and non-smoker and I ended up with a roomie who does both. He's cool though I can't complain, but I am one of the lucky ones. Those questionares are worthless. I think it's like what, 10-12 simple questions. Good luck with that.
