Could someone please explain what substance free housing is like and what the pros and cons are? On the questionnaire it asks if you are okay with drug/alcohol use in the room. If you answer no to both questions, what would be the use of doing substance free housing? Thanks!

From what I understood, substance free housing creates added precautions against students not only drinking/smoking in the room, but also ensures that a drugged/drunk person does not return to such a room. There’s also a clause about no paraphernalia glorifying drug/alcohol/cigarette use in the room. I’m sorry this reply comes after the housing app deadline, but I hope it helped :)

Also, about pros and cons.
A lot of people feel that committing to substance-free living segregates them from the rest of the students. I realised this when I was confused about whether to apply for a substance-free room or not.
However, statistics show that atleast 10% of MHC students request substance-free housing every year.
What I realised over the course of some deep contemplation is that if you truly believe that alcohol/drug use is harmful for you, substance-free living just helps keep your ideals in check. Even if you later decide to drink once in a while, the fact that you can’t return to your room that night will remind you that it isn’t good for you.
Well, you may not be able to relate to what I just said, but those are a few of the things that went through my mind before my room-mate and I settled on substance-free housing.
Good luck! :)
