Substance Free Housing

So.. What dorms exactly are substance free, does it have any impact as a freshman, and are they as sociable in general as normal dorms? Though I would like to have a relatively calm study area in my dorm (thus substance free), it's not really a necessity if they aren't as social as I've heard the other dorms are.

I’m really stereotyping here…

but it does make a difference about the types of people that you will be living with. For better or for worse. I have a few good friends in sub-free housing and they have mixed feelings about it. In my opinion, social, non-drinkers living in ‘regular’ dorms would be better off.

I think you have the wrong idea about Dartmouth if you think that your dorm wouldn’t be an acceptable space to study. I’ve never had a problem with noise… ever. (in my dorm that is).

This is very true.

Thanks for the responses. It’s always nice to have an insider’s opinion, and it’s definitely reassuring that you’ve never had problems with good environments in your dorms.

then perhaps you’ve never lived on mass row and tried to study on a monday/wed/fri/sat night … OR perhaps your room was a livable temperature and your windows didn’t have to be open at all times to not die of suffocation.

But no, generally, noise is not a problem.

Pretty much every year there’s a thread on Sub-Free housing … it has perks and it has drawbacks.

Use the search feature, do some reading, and then get back when you have more concrete questions…

Though, sub-free dorms are just as social as “normal” dorms (at least for shmen), though activities around which socializing occurs can be different. both are great ways to meet people, etc.

I agree with this too, now that I think about it.

im on sub free. its normal, please don’t worry about it. kids are for the most part normal (it tends to attract Christians, hardcore atheletes, and kids who just dont want boot all over the place) First, nobody is going to know that your residence hall is sub free ,especially if you meet someone a frat. Second, I know a good ammount of the subfree kids who take part in the dartmouth fun. Third, just because you are in subfree doesnt mean you can’t go out/make other friends in other buildings. Fourth, you will not have to deal with total messes in the bathroom/your room.

Also, the other dorms, even “sussel rage” isn’t as ragey as people make it out to be. You can study there, you can decide not to drink, etc in these other dorms.
