Success Stories with Appeals

My s and I are waiting on a response to an appeal and we were wondering what success stories were out there.

I know a young woman who, four years ago, got only 10K in merit from GW and appealed, on the basis of her senior year accomplishments, and she got an additional 8K. We thought that was pretty unusual.

I think that’s unusual, too. We’re waiting to hear, also.

Read the thread about BU. They say they grant half of their appeals, but the amount they raise the packages is between $500-$2,000.

We were successful in getting an increase a couple years ago at an LAC that does not promise to meet need. D was a finalist for the full ride scholarship, but she only received an amount that others received without being finalists for that competition. At the competition, they led us to believe that those not given the full ride would get a good award. A young man she met at the competition received that same award she did - we were very disappointed - it seemed those who were awarded larger scholarships were students who were vocal about wanting to go to more elite schools (thanks to facebook we knew who received what). We wrote an appeal letter based on our disappointment in the scholarship outcome (not mentioning that last assumption, of course). We stated that she would have to choose a competitor school that had offered her X dollars, since finances were an issue for us. They added a large grant to her package.
