My DD has applied to UF and her chances are less than 50-50 to get accepted. We will most likely be appealing and wanted to know if others have been successful with their appeal at UF or other schools? If so, any suggestions? Thanks.
Yes. Don’t appeal. It isn’t going to work. Help her find and be excited about match and safety schools.
@ProudParent2020 UF considers their admission decision to be the final answer. Appealing is for new and compelling information that was not in the original application. Because an exception to the decision is being asked for, success is quite rare.
Before submitting an appeal, contact UF and ask for the reason she was denied (keeping in mind UF uses holistic admissions).
EDIT: Here’s a thread from last year…
Thank you @Melissa96 for your relevant insight into UF’s appeals. @Gator88NE thank you for reposting last years appeals posting. I truly respect your opinion and knowledge! @intparent thanks for your 2 cents.
I’d assume she would have submitted the strongest application possible to start with. So unles she wins some major award or she inadvertently missed putting something in, an appeal is unlikely to sucveed.
I don’t think parents do their kids any favors pushing for appeals 99% of the time. Your job is more to keep your kids on even keel, encourage them to have a backup plan they can be happy with, and help them move forward with a plan that might not be their heart’s desire. Those lessons will serve them a lot better in the long run.
Agree with the above. Don’t appeal simply because your child was on the cusp and didn’t make the cut for admissions. Only consider an appeal of your feel: 1) there was a material error or if 2) there is material, extremely compelling, new information to add to the application. Successful appeals are very very rare.
I’m a UF alum and my son has been a Gator his entire life…we’ve been to campus many times for games and other events. I’m not real confident he’s going to get into our dream school on Friday given all of the competition. He got accepted to FSU and I’m making a point to let him know how well he would do there if he doesn’t get into UF. We will be ecstatic if gets in on Friday, but I think he’s ready to transition to being a Nole if UF is not meant to be. Very proud of him either way.
It was a VERY tough year for FSU admissions, also. He should be very proud and excited if he ends up going to FSU! They’re having probably their strongest freshman class ever in terms of stats. UF’s admissions had a lot of carnage this year, many disappointed applicants.
i am in the same boat, i intend on appealing my decision for UF. i want to hear success stories and what are some grounds that people have appealed on in the past that worked. i know of a friend that got in on appeal so i know it’s not impossible.
usually if you bring something new, different or overlooked to their attention.
If you just point out that the application they already have is very strong, that doesn’t really help your case.
@ufwannabe2022 : did you win a major award since you applied? Make a major mistake in the original application that you only now discovered? Forget to mention an extenuating circumstance (being an orphan, a teenage parent, homeless…?)
If not, don’t submit an appeal. Focus on your other acceptances. If none make you happy, look at the list of colleges still accepting applications or wait for the NACAC list in May (colleges that miscalculated yield).
@myos1634 i applied to agricultural education and communication which is in the college of ag and life science. UF is the only school in state with this major. i did apply under disability having ADHD, i just am not sure what new circumstances could be.
You can appeal by pointing out it’s the only major in the state but honestly your odds are close to zero.
Where else did you get in?
Our high school guidance counselor stated that UF does not let you know why you didnt get in and won’t let the guidance counselors know either.
UF would only tell you the reason you where denied, if it’s due to something like a missing HS transcript, missing test scores, etc. They will not tell you it’s because your GPA was a little low, or your class rigor was a little light (the person you’re talking with in admissions will have no idea).
@ufwannabe2022 - Has anyone heard back from UF on their admissions appeal for 2018? My DD submitted her appeal two weeks ago and still waiting for their decision. Fingers crossed…
I tried to appeal my application because a friend with the same stats as me got in while I did not. However, they flat out said no
