Successful University of Florida appeal?

Good morning! I have done so much research but can’t find anyone who SUCCESSFULLY appealed a denied application to University of Florida. Has anyone done it or knew someone who did it? I hear success rate is about 3% but don’t know how many actually appeal. Any info is helpful. Thank you!

I have never heard of someone successfully appealing. Usually, as harsh as it is, if they rejected you once, they will have no problem with doing it again. If you come up with specific reasons that are valid (i.e. high test scores, GPA, and extracurricular involvement all outstanding- like could have gone to top public like Duke or an Ivy League outstanding-or you had some outstanding circumstances like an immediate family member’s death, extreme illness, etc) you might have a shot. If it’s your dream school you might as well appeal but I know multiple people who have and none of them have been successful.

I think a successful appeal would require you to demonstrate that an error was made in the decision process. Aside from that, it would take a truly exceptional situation to get them to reconsider.

It’s unfortunate, but if it was easy, they would be flooded with endless appeals.

To follow up on this thread for anyone who is interested…The appeals process for UF is a follows. The student must call the admissions office “after March 1” and is questioned to see if s/he qualifies for an appeals package. If the admissions officer determines s/he is a candidate “with new and compelling information not listed on the application” then they will mail an appeals package. Here is the reality straight out of UF admissions: they get a few hundred each year and less than 1% of appeals are granted. That is the process in case anyone was curious. I know it was hard to find accurate recent UF appeal info so I wanted to share.

Did anyone out there appeal an admission decision to UF or any other school? Just wondering if we are the only ones out here or if there are others awaiting a decision.

To bring this full circle, I am writing this to help anyone who is ever thinking about a UF appeal. My daughter WAS GRANTED her appeal today! You really need to present “new and compelling information” that was not on the application. She sent in the appeal on 3/14 and we just heard back today 4/7. Waiting was agonizing! However, please know that you don’t have to wait for the letter in the mail. Keep checking your application status online b/c it will change if the appeal is granted. That’s how we found out. It is not easy but it is possible to win a UF appeal!!! Good luck to everyone and GO GATORS!!!

WOOTTT!!!

Please Welcome her to the Gator Nation! :-bd

Thanks Gator88NE! I’ve read many of your posts while researching this topic and you give great advice. GO GATORS!!!

Wow, congrats to your daughter and great job!

Momoflove, I’m interested in what UF considers “new and compelling information?” Obviously, your daughter was able to present the right information to sway admissions. Can you give me a sense of what your daughter argued in her appeal to be successful?

what new information did you add?

I had stopped logging in since my daughter is now enrolled, but thought I’d check in now that Class of 2021 admissions is over and a new group may be seeking info.

It’s my personal belief that UF puts its money where its mouth is when it says it seeks diversity. My daughter had not brought something significant about herself to light in her application because she was nervous it would work against her. It’s a personal situation so I’d prefer not to get into details. The takeaway is that if you are looking to appeal, you really need something “new and compelling” (their words, not mine) to show them. It’s also an excruciatingly emotional process and one which threatens to give a double dose of rejection. Many times while we were waiting I wondered if I should have allowed her to appeal b/c it was so draining. It felt like forever to get the decision so any appealing family needs to be really supportive.

Good luck to all those future Baby Gators out there!

Thank you for the info. Are you still available for some questions?

Hey momoflove,
My son is waiting to hear back from UF regarding his appeal. Ironically, my son also sent his appeal in on 3/14/17 just like your daughter. Maybe that date might be the trick? LOL!! Was wondering if the online application status changed on 4/7 or whether you “heard back” from UF via the letter on 4/7? And yes, the waiting is agonizing!!
