Suggest Some Schools

I'm a Junior right now, and I'm just looking for some colleges. I'm in Connecticut, location isn't that big of a deal. Going to school in the northeast would be awesome (NY & New England) but again, it doesn't matter all that much to me except for: one thing I would like it to stay up and down the east coast, no farther west than Chicago.

I'd like to do Computer Engineering or Computer Science in college. Haven't taken the SATs yet, but I'm going to assume that when it is all said and done, I'm going to have a 720-800 Math, 550-650 CR, and 600-700 Writing. My unweighted GPA = 3.45, but I'm feeling my Jr may be up around a 3.6-3.7 (3.6 after 1st qtr). My school doesn't weight GPA, but it does for rank (30/240). My school sends a few grads per year to top schools, it's a pretty well known school for academics in CT. Money - not a huge issue tbh. Size of the school also not a big deal. I like sports, but a small school is just as fine for me as a big school.

So suggest some schools for me! Thanks!

PS: From this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/20745-what-most-impt-factor-selecting-college.html - I'd rank myself like this:

Academic strength
Prestige
Geography (close)
Tuition
Athletics

SLight,

If you are interested in engineering or computer science you should look at Lafayette College. It is one of the only LAC’s that also offers a full engineering program. In addition, it is only two to three hours away from CT depending on your location. It is close to both Philadelphia and New York. It is one of the smallest D-1 programs for sports but it has a full club sport program that replicates a D-3 program. In addition it also offers an intramural program.

^Lafayette’s a great suggestion for a small-school atmosphere. Union would work well, too.

Anyways, what size of school do you prefer? Atmosphere?

A quick list to go by would be:

U Pitt
Penn State
SUNY-Bing
Clarkson
RIT
Case Western
Kettering
Drexel

Do you need FA? Can you pay full freight at most schools?

Yeah, we’re ~$250k I think, so I guess no FA. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, keep 'em coming! ;)

Just curious, is Pitt really a school for a 1870-2150?

Your scores would be perfect for Pitt. Your grades are a little low (and Pitt is different in that GPA is highly weighted while class rank is only considered). If you’re willing to overlook athletics a little: Case Western, RPI, WPI.

The above suggestions are excellent. If the boards come out well, a tougher group of schools to consider are Carnegie Mellon, Bucknell and Lehigh
Pitt, by the way, sends acceptances very early, so you could have one under your belt in October, which is nice. And it is the only big time sports school above (except for hockey)

Good luck

Thanks for your help everybody!

Feel free to suggest more schools below, but again, thanks to everyone above that’s helped!

I would say that Penn State is also a big-time sports school…

Do you guys think I’d have a chance @ Georgia Tech? I forgot to mention - my schedule has been all Honors throughout HS with AP Chem (this year) and next year, AP Physics, AP Calc, and possibly AP English (if not then H English).

Very doubtful for GTech. The primary factor considered in admission is GPA. 60% have a 3.75 or higher.

Erin’s Dad: UW or W? Because if mine were weighted, I’d easily have a 3.75 or higher. Anyway, looks like private school may be biting me in the ass…I’d probably have a 3.8 or 3.9 in public.

They list UW grades to standardize for the common data set.
