I will be a high school sophomore this coming fall but Im still not sure what to major in. Please leave give me some suggestions.
I’m interested in Architectural engineering, civil engineering, economy/ financial related, optometry.
My parents’s interests : dentist, psychiatrist, surgeon, basically anything medical related that has a decent salary.
I want to chase my own dream but I also don’t want to upset my parents. Please give some suggestions about each major
At this point, you want to prepare yourself for either option…try to take the highest level Science and Math levels that you can.
If you think you are interested in the medical field, do some volunteering in that area.
Engineering is a Professional major…that is, the major leads directly to a job with a decent salary.
I would not worry about upsetting your parents because you want to be an engineer.
That is getting too involved in your life if you ask me.
Do remember that you can major in anything you want to go to medical school as long as you take the pre-requisites.
You don’t have to make any decisions right now! You still have three more years of high school. Just take the highest-level classes you can handle across fields (science and math, but also language arts and social sciences) and do well in school.
Also, pretty much everything on your own interest list is a good job with good salary prospects, but at 15 your interests and career preferences may change so much in the next 3-5 years. Heck, mine did in the last 3-5 years, and I’m 30.
You have time. When you go to the doctor, optometrist, dentist, etc. talk to them. Ask them if they are happy with their career choice. As them if they would do it again and ask them if they would encourage their own children to go into the profession.
If you meet architectural or civil engineers, I would ask them the same series of questions.
