Basically, I'm looking to major in linguistics and explore computational linguistics and artificial intelligence, as well as applied and theoretical linguistics. I'm also interested in learning foreign languages and international relations.

My stats:
I'm not sure about my GPA, weighted it's probably around 3.5
SAT I: CR 800, Math 600 (Weak, I know), WR 700
SAT II: US Hist 740 Lit 700
AP US Hist 5 (Planning on taking AP Gov and Spanish senior year)

ECs: Played guitar for 6 years, participated in Blues Society, Played in School play, may join Academic Decathlon senior year, worked fast food for over a year,-still employed.

About me: Mixed (half white, black) female, raised by single parent, from Northern California.

My list of potential colleges (Colleges on the East or West coast):

Reach: Cornell
Good Match: UC Santa Cruz, Occidental
Safety: Sand Diego State, other CSUs

The purpose of this thread is to get suggestions of good reach, match, and safety schools, especially match schools that I have a real chance of getting into. I appreciate anyone who reads this thread and lends me some insight, as I'm a bit lost when it comes to my college search.

Linguistics + CS major here (with emphasis on computational linguistics + AI). :)

I'd say you have your schools chosen pretty well. If you can get your SAT score up--which, by the way, is already very strong--you'd have a better shot at Cornell. As it stands, UCSC is about a safe match, possibly a safety. I'd also really recommend you check out Stanford--a reach, yes, but it has, IMO, the strongest departments in CS and linguistics, and probably has the strongest computational linguistics study in the world. (URM + single-parent household + strong SAT + strong interest in an uncommon field + interest in subfields that have few females = good shot)

Other possible matches for you: UMass-Amherst, U Arizona, U Connecticut, and maybe OSU. All of these are strong in linguistics. Reaches: UCLA, Berkeley, U Penn.

For safeties, definitely go for some CSUs--SJSU, SDSU, etc.

I'd also recommend you go on :: College Planning Made Easy | Inside Source for College Admissions Requirements and do a college search (using the matchmaker) with the linguistics major as the only criterion; that'll return about 130 colleges that offer the major, and you can go from there. That's what I did, and my search (as well as my admissions results) went well. Good luck, and if you have any questions/ponderings/whathaveyou about the major, feel free to PM me. :)

Check out University of Washington they have a program in computational linguistics.

MIT and CMU are also good choices for computational linguistics and AI, but both would be reaches.

Penn. You can either double in CS and Linguistics or you can major in cognitive science and combine the two.

I don't think I could get into MIT or Penn. I'd love to go to Penn, though

Don't sell yourself short. You'll regret it. I don't know many female urms from single parent households who scored that high on the SAT (with an 800 in CR no less) and still manage to find time to work in a fast food place. What I am worried about is your GPA, a 3.5 weighted is sort of low, but I think you should find out what your GPA is as soon as possible because a 3.5W is a world of difference from a 3.5 UW. Now, I don't have any additional suggestions to make for schools (I think they've been covered plenty here) but I'm pretty sure the only school on your current list where you may have some trouble with is Cornell (and frankly I'd bet your odds are better than 50/50 here given the circumstances). I especially implore you to apply to highly selective schools because these are the ones that will meet your full need, which will likely result in a near full-ride from what I can tell. I'd be willing to bet that the schools on your list (sans-Cornell of course) will require you to take some hefty loans. Good Luck on your college search!

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. My GPA may be a bit higher, last semester I received straight As, including 1 AP. It demonstrates a little upward trend, at least. I also replaced a D earned in Sophomore year with an A. I just wish I had more time to do well in school.

Maybe Brown as a reach. Decent Linguistics department (combined with Cognitive Science), but there's a lot in the way of Computer Science. Might be worth it to check out the department websites and course catalogue to see what you think, though (for any school you apply to!).

I'm wondering if Kyledavid received my PM or no?
