Suggestions for PORTABLE VACUUM for DORM?

Any one have a recommendation for a dorm vacuum?
Please include brand name and the particular style.
Thanks!

?Not sure what you want, but I got my daughter a Dust Devil. Seemed like the best combo of size and flexibility. She didn't have any space, and has to store all her possessions at school (we're 1300 miles away). But her room had been renovated this summer - new carpet, furnishings and paint, so once the construction mess was cleaned up, and she and roomie moved in, they were able to get the room fairly clean, and have been able to keep up with just the Dirt Devil, and the dorm vac occasionally for the floor.

No bright ideas on vacs... but is it nice to have them to talk about rather than admissions statistics?

I'd look for a Shark...I think it may be Dirt Devil Brand...but they are pretty cheap, portable, and can fit into tight spaces!

one the kid will use ;).

Moved DS out from Bates, his Visiting school, last week. Wanted to vacuum his area rug before I would even touch it. His floor's vacuum was completely broken; I lugged the 1st floor vacuum up to his floor - it made a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. No rugs in that dorm had seen the business end of a vacuum for the entire semester, as far a I could see. Luckily, I discovered upon bravely attempting to roll up the danged rug that the underside was about 1000x cleaner than the upper.

I have this one in my dorm room, and I think it's super.

There are a lot of different dustbusters; I would pick one with a higher voltage rather than a lower one, as they seem to work much better.

Duh - "dust devil" is something you see in the desert. I bought her a Dirt Devil - red, comes with a couple of attachment doohickeys.

We have had some success with the Euro Pro rechargeable cordless sweeper vacs, also made by Shark, I think; they are light and quiet.

Which DIRT DEVIL..I see lots of different ones on ebay.

Also do you all think a plug in vac or a rechargeable one?

What a novel concept!! Kid at college with his/her own vac!

Space could be a major issue, but I am a firm believer that the best value in vacuum cleaners, best suck for the buck, is in the Sears line of shop vacs! Check em out! Also useful in a dorm environment in that they can suck up liquid messes.

How about the little thing made by Swiffer? It is not really a vacuum cleaner - but it does rugs (probably good on the indoor/outdoor kind of carpet the dorms have). The good thing is they are available at the grocery store (eliminates a KMart trip), cheap and collapsible. Here's a link to it:

I forgot to mention - go to the home page there because there is a $3.00 coupon for it.

When I went home for Thanksgiving, I brought back the cheap $10 stick-vac vacuum that Walmart had on sale for Black Friday. It's about the size of a handheld vacuum when it's disassembeled and it fit in my roll-on suitcase. I have linoleum floors in my room and the vacuum works great.

This isn't really portable, and probably not practical for everyone, but I use this and it's amazing:

Whatever you get, plan it it being broken/worn out/blown up, etc. fairly quickly! It will be borrowed and abused. But while it is working, your kid will be very popular!

Glad to hear that. I bought that exact one for DS for Christmas. Not on his list but a definite need after seeing their room on Family Weekend. Can't imagine it now.

Carol

DD has the purple one from walmart for $20. She uses it on her rugs and her hard floors in the dorm. She says it works great and she is a neat freak.

Kat

We have "The Boss" by Eureka for DS. I would suggest you go to Target or someplace like that. Ours cost under $30. I personally would rather have a new one than one off of Ebay. DD bought it for DS for Christmas the year he was a college freshman.

We are also getting DS a Swiffer for Christmas this year...to keep the dust and grime off the floor!!

What floor .... you mean dorm rooms have floors ????

Wow! A vacuum would be wasted on my S and his roommates, I suspect. They get rooms cleaned every other week, IF room is accessible. I doubt anyone could find the floor with all the stuff on top
