Suggestions for Tulane/NOLA Visit

Thanks for the additional recommendations…they have been added to our list! Leave on Thursday…We are so excited to see the school and surroundings!

I just returned from NOLA (my son is a Tulane Junior) after moving my son into an off campus apartment (he was abroad in Madrid last semester). As usual, every meal was amazing. Here is where we ate:
La Petite Grocery- on Magazine Street (not far from School). Authentic NOLA cuisine. Really good food, very pretty place. A bit pricey. They have a private parking lot (you need to get the code from them ahead of time).
Johnny Sanchez- mexican food, business district - casual, not to pricey. good food
Satsuma Cafe- Maple Street- walking distance to school. Very casual lunch place (you order at the counter and they bring it out to your table)- amazing sandwiches and salads. You can eat outside on a nice day. (There are several restaurants nearby that students can walk to. It’s a good area to check out on your visit.
Mint Modern Vietnamese - on Feret Street - not too far from campus. Super casual, amazing food. good for lunch or dinner.
Wayfare- also on Feret. My most favorite gourmet sandwich shop. I try to go here every trip to NOLA. Casual and delicious. Lunch or dinner. (There are several cool restaurants in this area too (Feret Street), including DAT Dog, a Tulane student favorite.
BTW, we stayed at the Hampton Inn on St Charles which is fairly close to campus. We stay there often and I am happy to report that the rooms have recently been renovated and are actually quite nice. If you make a reservation, be sure to ask for the Tulane rate. They have free parking and free breakfast.

I’ve been following some of the Tulane posts for the last few months and really appreciate all the great information especially from @fallenchemist! We are lucky to have you and your insight to the school so I just want to say thank you! My daughter is a Junior as well and she is very interested in Tulane. We visited last November and she really loved the school and all that NOLA had to offer. I wanted to suggest a bicycle tour. We did it one of the mornings that we were there and all of us (we were a group of nine with two juniors looking at Tulane ) thought it was a great way to connect to New Orleans. Our guide took us all over and explained the history, culture and people of NOLA. My daughter came away from it with a deeper appreciation of the city. The tour we took left from Burgundy Street. I’m not sure I can mention specific companies but they are on TripAdvisor if you look under “Things to Do in New Orleans.” The tour stopped at a park where we had beignets that I thought were better than Cafe Du Monde! We also saw a jazz performance at Preservation Hall which allows teens under 18 to attend. I wanted to take her to Tipitina’s too but they have to be 18 or over. If you decide to go to Preservation Hall I would book the tickets online in advance and get a seat. There is standing room only but the room is small and cramped. The show is about an hour long. We also went to Frenchmen Street but while my husband and I enjoyed it I don’t think our daughter thought much of it. She actually enjoyed our visit to Bourbon Street more because of the eccentric people we saw the night we were there (grandma dressed as Santa riding a bicycle blasting Christmas music). I also recommend a visit to Creole Creamery not far from Tulane. The ice cream is yummy! The shop next door St. James Cheese Company is also great for salads and sandwiches!

You want Tulane students near campus? Go down Freret to Dat Dog! Yum!

@College4Juju

In this context, yes. You are not allowed to promote your own company or services, or go overboard by plastering the site about a company you like. But in this kind of occasional helpful context, no problem. Even a link to a web page is OK.

Thanks for the very kind shout-out. Glad you enjoyed your visit, the bike tour is something that has been mentioned in the past (I think @jym626 is a big fan if I recall correctly), but it hasn’t been mentioned again in awhile. So many things to do!!

We did the Segway tour. That was great!

Just an update: Just returned from our trip and had a fantastic time. What a great school and city.

We stayed at the Park View Guest House, which was right across from the University and next door to Audubon Park. Great location for our needs, great homemade continental breakfast…very homey.

Not only did we get to tour the school but my son sat in on a political science class ( his intended major). I didn’t attend but according to my son, the professor was very gracious, spent some time after class talking with him, etc. Left a really good impression on him of the type of interaction he could have at Tulane.

We walked all of Audubon Park, Audubon Zoo, The Fly, rode the Street Car, Visited the Aquarium, Bourbon Street, Jackson Square. We ran out of time and never made it to Magazine Street , nor did we get to take any tours ( next time for sure!). We ate at and enjoyed: Crepe a la Cart and Satsuma ( right near the University), Mellow Mushroom (pizza place on Oak) and The Ruby Slipper.

My son’s favorite part: attending the Tulane v SMU basketball game on Sunday afternoon…the amount of school spirit that was evident was priceless…no amount of touring could have replicated it.

Thank you to everyone that provided information…CC is always a great, great resource.

Final information to share…some places like Yo Mama’s would let us dine there as we had people in our party under 21. If they have gaming machines, under 21 not allowed, even with parents present.

Yep, several people mentioned that in their recommendations, it’s one law they are very strict on.

Glad you had a great time! Sounds like you didn’t sleep!

@fallschurchmom how many days/nights was your visit?

We flew up Thursday evening and returned back home Monday morning. That gave us 3 full days and could have used one or two more!
