Suggestions of Colleges with Music Majors

@tugogi you probably know this but Bard Conservatory requires a double degree. Oberlin is very very supportive of double degrees. Tufts double degree with NEC is BA or BS (could be math or science) with BM at NEC. Harvard’s is BA or BS with an MM at NEC. NEC also has a double degree plan with Berklee .

Yale School of Music may not benefit an undergrad since many study with a grad student, though there are exceptions. Yale also has more gen ed requirements, something else to check at schools. So much to think about!

Then again Yale has added a double degree program- so that is a good option.

We had an experience where a school offered to find a teacher when they didn’t have one on faculty formally. We also had an experience where a conservatory teacher offered to teach, when my kid decided not to enroll there but in a nearby BA program instead.

Again, that Double Degree Dilemma essay might help.

It seems your son would benefit from a double degree OR majoring in math and/or science and doing music via lessons and performance, with music electives, OR doing a double major music and math/science but not a BM. The hardest route would seem to be a BM program and then trying to fit in or access math and/or science in any meaningful way.

Just want to mention that if he doesn’t do a BM, but is on a campus that offers one, he needs to look into whether the best opportunities for teachers and performances, and classes, go to the BM students. In which case that school might be off the list. Oberlin is an example of a school that has realized this problem and they have enhanced their Musical Studies BA program so that students not doing the BM in the Conservatory can still access opportunities.

@tugogi Just ran across this on the UC Berkeley site: their music department offers a BA and the website says “There are a large number of double majors in the department representing fields such as Molecular and Cell Biology, Rhetoric, Physics, Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, Political Economy of Industrial Societies, English, and Business Administration, to just name a few.”

So it can be done within a BA program, at UC Berkeley and other schools, but still, I think, difficult! Just didn’t want to close out the option entirely.
