I had the same concern, being from NY.So far we've been assured its not a suitcase school, especially in football season..but its a question I plan to keep asking to each new person associated with the school that we have contact with.
Maybe Thumper can add some info, shes also from the NE and has visited....

Here's what I know...there ARE a lot of students from SC who attend USC. BUT it is a large school. One of my coworkers graduated from there 7 years ago. She said there was NEVER a shortage of people or things to do on the weekends. She lived close enough to go home but seldom did. Her recollection was that for the first month or so, more kids went home who were more local, but after that, they didn't. She also said that when she DID go home, she often invited a friend whose family lived far away to join her...not a bad thing. And during football season NO ONE goes home...they all (81,000 people fit into that stadium) go to the games.

I ask because another friend's child went to a FL state school in Tampa this year, and was assured it was not a "suitcase" school, but in fact, it was - she was very unhappy and transferred after the first semester.
