SuMAC (Stanford University Mathematics Camp) 2014

Rejected. :frowning: :frowning: :(

Sure, rejected:
Indian male sophomore
Semi-competitive bay area public high school
4.3 GPA
Currently in AP Calc AB (School makes you take AB then BC)
Good recommendation
I thought I got most of the problems right but was unsure about 2 and 5.

@DiscipulusBonus‌ accepted to Program 1?

@Mathemusician112‌ Honestly, I had a pretty mediocre app (stats-wise), but I managed to solve them all, and I think my teacher recs were pretty good. Idk how many I got right.

 • Asian female, sophomore
 • qualified for AIME, taken AP Calculus BC, AP Stats, in Math Club at school, 3.7 GPA

@thatswhatitis‌ @Inyx261 I wasn’t sure about the last problem and #3, and some of my proofs might have been iffy…

My stats were qualifying for AIME, taken BC Calc, Stats, and Calc III, currently enrolled in Linear Algebra, Advanced Topics, and Number Theory at a local university, valedictorian of my high school, 800 on Math II, as well as a few programs on the weekend. I’m not sure about my recs, but I thought they would be pretty good. I thought my courseload would make up for whatever I got wrong, but I guess not…

Any speculation as to why I got rejected? I’m a little worried.

The email did say they had a lot more applicants than usual, so I think that may have been why alot of us got rejected

Looks like a lot of people applied this year because of the amount of rejections, including mine. :-/ it’s okay I guess, maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.

I’m a floridian, got rejected/deferred? I’m not sure is there a waitlist for this program?

did everyone get this (who got rejected):

We have reviewed your application for the 2014 Stanford University Mathematics Camp. Although your application indicates many fine accomplishments, we are unable to admit you into the program this year. Please understand that your application was reviewed carefully, and this was not an easy decision for us to make.

This year’s applicant pool is much larger than in previous years, thus admission has become increasingly selective. Many excellent students have been denied admission due to the strength and size of the applicant pool.

We wish you the best of luck with your summer plans and thank you again for your interest in SUMaC

Hey is there anyone who gets in?
I am waitlisted…

…

Admitted to Program II,

:)

@Vigilante13: That’s exactly what I got. Form letters suck.

I wish they at least told us why we got rejected. @leila2016‌ did your email say waitlisted?

@Upisacup what are your stats? Also, are you a rising junior or senior?

@thatswhatitis
yeah they say clearly that “we have put you on the wait list”

@thatswhatitis: I just e-mailed them back and asked what I could have done to improve my application. It couldn’t hurt to ask.

@DiscipulusBonus Let us know what they tell you! I was thinking of doing so too.

@Vigilante13: I am currently a junior.

As for my Stats, I do not know exactly what you mean, but my GPA is a little less than 4, I have only ever taken a single pre ap or ap class (will take more next year, though) but i think I had a valid reason.

I have taken olympiads and such (math and physics) and done rather well. I have also attended camps like this one for the last two years.

I hate the way they send rejections too… I have been rejected from like ten places so far, i think, since ninth grade, and the passive indifference with which they say things that mean a lot to you really hurts.

Gotta love bureaucracy:

"Thank you for reaching out to us. Similar to the college admissions process, our admission committee does not release their notes on the applicants.

Please understand that we have received a growth in applicants each year, so our program has become increasingly more selective. The Stanford University Mathematics Camp receives far more applications each year than we are able to accommodate, many of which are quite exceptional.

We wish you all the best this summer."

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Agh, this is infuriating.

@DiscipulusBonus‌ well that really sucks. Guess we’ll never know. I guess next year I’l work harder and hopefully get in. to all who got rejected, in all honesty, its ok. Next year hopefully will be a better year. congrats to everyone who got accepted.

Yeah, sadly I’m a junior, so this was my last chance. I was really expecting to get into SUMaC, so now I’ve got no plans for the summer. :(
