I’m interested in applying to SUMaC for the summer of 2016. Does anyone know when apps will come out?
And also to those who are SUMaC alumni, what was your experience like? What was the rigor of the campers/camp like? Would you recommend it?
Hi I went to sumac last year (program I). It was really fun and I plan on going again this year. I didn’t really find it hard or anything because I already knew all of the stuff in program I, and from what I’ve been told by people at my school who took program II, I won’t have much trouble with it either, but it was a nice time. As far as rigor is concerned, 4 days a week there are a couple hours of lecture and a couple hours to work on p-sets, and there is a pretty laid back research presentation at the end. So if you want to sit in a room doing math all day, I don’t recommend sumac, but if you want a healthy dose along with some fun, you could do far worse.
Also, the apps should come out sometime this month, but I don’t think they have given any info as to the exact date. I’m guessing you’d be able to find it at https://sumac.stanford.edu/ when it comes out though.
My son went to SUMAC last summer. He submitted both his handwritten solutions and he typed up summary solutions for how he solved each problem. One reason for typing was in case they couldn’t read his handwriting! Another reason was to explain his thinking, what wrong paths he went down before solving, etc…
How important is the SUMAC problem set in relation to the rest of the app? I want to do my best, but in comparison with other applicants, I’m not the best at proofs. What if I were to put a real effort into each problem, but only correctly answer a few? Or is there a certain amount of problems that I should really try to get right?
Hi, I’m applying to SUMaC and was wondering about the relative selectivity. I have heard it is extremely selective, but SUMaC’s tuition seems to much higher than other comparable math camps. A lot of people say that the higher the price of the camp is, the less prestigious it is (due to lack of funding). Is this at all true, or do you think there’s a legitimately good reason that SUMaC’s tuition is $2000+ higher than that of other good math camps (e.g. PROMYS, Ross, Mathcamp, etc.) ?

@hardikk21 handwrote mine! @tautisgood problem set is by far the most important thing. i solved ~9.5/10 problems last year (not sure about how many of them ended up being correct). coming up with some really cool ideas for a problem is a definite bonus! obviously i don’t serve on the admissions committee, so i guess it would really depend. i think you are best off solving as many as you can, and writing the proofs to the best of your abilities. as for selectivity, i’ve heard that the acceptance rate is ~<10%, not 100% though. best of luck!
Hi @kmjwns! Do you have any suggestions for how long our essays should be? I don’t think there is a character cap, but I don’t want to write too much or too little XD
