I’m a current freshman considering applying to SuMAC for summer 2020, the summer after my sophomore year. I have an A+ in Precalculus right now and will be taking AP Calc BC next year as a sophomore.
I have also been considering taking Multivariable Differential Calculus online at ULO during that summer (https://ulo.stanford.edu/mathematics). Because of this, I was wondering if any previous SuMAC students could give me an idea of how much free time there would be during the session, as the online class would be for the whole summer and takes about 8-12 hours a week. Would I have time to do it and SuMAC at the same time?
SUMaC is a fantastic program! One of the top mathematics programs in the nation by far
Based on what I’ve seen on past threads and from friends that went, it seems that people had quite a bit of free time, although I think their free time was spent on doing coursework given by the professors. I would say that if you got into SUMaC, just commit all of your time to it. You will end up doing Multi in college anyways, so there’s really no point for stressing yourself out, unless math is your thing :))
I should have mentioned this in the original post, but I am planning on taking Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations in junior year in school, then possibly Real and Complex Analysis online in addition to Differential Equations II at school during senior year. Multivariable Calculus at my school is differential and integral combined into one semester-long course, so I think Stanford’s 2 separate classes (differential during summer, integral in first semester junior year) might be more in depth and would save space on my schedule.
Also, math is definitely my thing; I’m planning on majoring in math and possibly physics in college. That’s still several years away though, so who knows what might happen.
