That’s awesome. It’s my dream festival - chamber music, chamber orchestra, great teacher… Fingers crossed! I’m hoping that the late notification date and/or fact that there’s tuition makes the one bass player turn it down…

Marina27, my daughter loves chamber music, so I think she’ll be very happy there this summer!

Good luck, Cosmos!

Thanks. bluepearl, by what date did your daughter have to accept the offer?

Never mind… The other person took the spot…

That’s too bad, Cosmos.

Well, I’m not exactly chuffed, but I’m not that disappointed either, to be honest. It would be fun, but my duty this summer is to my undergraduate honors thesis paper, Fulbright essay, grad school personal statement, and GRE…

So DD got accepted to a music festival and she was awarded a rather small amount, around 20% of the total cost, to be specific.
We did not fill out financial aid forms because we didn’t think that we were going to qualify for it.
As it turns out, I just lost my job and that makes a big difference in our financial situation.
DD has some savings but she also has car payments to make, specially now that I won’t be able to help her with those payments as much as I have been doing since she got the car.
So, my question is, is it possible to appeal financial aid for music festivals? I am sure it doesn’t hurt to ask and it can’t ‘ruin her chances’ at this point but, is it done at all? Has anybody ever tried to appeal financial aid? Actually this is more of a case of applying for financial aid because the money she got was for merit… What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

It couldn’t hurt. We had virtually the same thing happen while D was an undergrad. She won a bit of merit aid but the program had already disbursed all the other funds(so maybe you should get right on it!). Things worked out as they frequently do since her teacher then turned her on to a local opera guild who helped out. Good luck with all that!

D is also an undergrad. I guess she should send an e-mail to the admissions office explaining the situation and asking if it’s possible to get financial aid at this point?
Sorry I seem clueless, I just don’t know what’s the best way to go about this…

That seems about right, and maybe a follow up call. I feel your pain. H has been out of work for going on two years. It hurts, but a lot of these kids become stronger for it. D is now a grad student and completely self sufficient. Has a small studio of about 8 students, making about $1500 in soloist work this week(Messiah–KA–CHING!!) , has a few professional concerts this summer and now knows how to scramble for funds (guilds, patrons, cultural institutions, and competitions have all worked). All but $700 of her tuition is covered by fellowships. Ask the program if they are aware of any outside grants and hit up her teacher as well (college faculty have the inside track on this).

Thanks, Musicamusica!

Yes, it is tough. I have been out of work before also and it takes a lot of patience in this economy but I know things eventually work out!

I will tell her to talk to her teacher about it.

I just introduced myself in the introduction thread! My daughter is a HS junior, flutist. She has been accepted into Aria International (Session III). Due to other summer activities, we were looking for one that was not an entire summer. I think this will work will for her. Not too short, not too long + some good faculty.

Hi - Trying to decide on summer with my soph. daughter violinist.

So far accepted to…

Indiana String Academy - Indiana U

NHSMI - Northwestern

Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival

ANybody been to these or knows anyone going this year?

Also she is on waitlist for Heifetz.

Thanks for any info!!!

Leah

suzukimom3, I provided info in your other post http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1064547470-post496.html

FluteTooter, Aria is a great program but the majority of folks are college age and older (16-28), a HS Junior might possibly feel out of place, I would speak with someone and get the age group of the flutists in her session.

Then again, now that Aria is boot camp only, not chamber music, it might be just fine. D attended a boot camp session last year and there were plenty of HS students so I was surprised to read sagiter’s comment.

I really didn’t mean anything past what I said. Aria was on our list for summer possibilities for our daughter who coincidentaly is also a junior flautist. In my notes one of the questions was to check on the age of candidates. As we came up with other stuff for her I never inquired. It was just something that popped into my head when I read the post.

Has anyone heard from Eastern Music Festival yet, other than string players? The latest email from them said that strings would be notified by the end of March, and the rest would be told in “early to mid March.” The few times I’ve emailed them with various questions, I’ve never gotten a response. If I don’t hear this week, would it be worth a phone call?

Hi Allegro,

My d heard from EMF about two weeks ago.
If I were you I would definitely give them a call.
Good luck!
