Summer 11 Music Festivals

Glassharmonica and Tomdug, I will also be attending MAW this summer… since it’s such a small place, I’m guessing I’ll meet your kids!

bratsche, are you the same bratsche who posted last year and is now in an MM program at IU? Small world, small place!

yup, that’s me… the music world is tiny. =)

Has anyone attended the Philadelphia Music Festival before, specifically the “Music House” for college students and young professionals? It looks good on paper, but it looks like it was used to be just for strings. So, if anyone has an idea of what the experience might be for instrumentalists, I’d love to hear. It doesn’t seem to be run by the Philadelphia Orchestra, although there seems to be some affiliation with it, but instead is listed as part of “Sandy Marcucci International Camps”. The fact that they’re now running this Facebook ‘popularity contest’ for scholarships makes me slightly leery of the quality. Advice?

Anyone have experience with the Eastman summer programs, specifically the Music Horizons program?

Clarimom,

My daughter attended as a high school student when it was Strings International. Sandy Marucci handled the administrative details such as registration, publicity, scheduling and so forth. Kym Fischer was the music director and many of the teachers were from the Philadelphia Orchestra and very high quality. My daughter’s time there was a huge turning point for her because the Philly principal bass worked with her there and later at a couple of private lessons to change her whole approach to the instrument, then handed her off to one of his proteges who is now Assistant Principal in Philly. She studied with that teacher for the rest of her high school career.

I do not know what their college age program is like. The one negative that I have heard about the camp is that the students in the top groups get much better teachers than the ones placed in the lower groups and you don’t know which group you will be in until you get there. I don’t think the college-age program is split up that way, though.

Hi, I’m a senior in high school now and found out last week I was accepted to Brevard (HS division) and EMF on oboe! Trouble is, I have to let EMF know my decision by tomorrow, and I have no idea which one would be the better program for me…Any advice?? I’m considering quality of the music program and also student life.

I know EMF for wind players is mostly college students, so that might mean musically it’s better for me, but I also like the outdoorsy setting of Brevard…

Any input is appreciated!

@sounditout: my D (viola) attended EMF a few+ years back and it was great. Nice setting. Good orchestra. My S (trumpet) was at Brevard summer before last and also liked it a lot. Brevard wind players alternate between orch. and symphonic band. My son was not looking forward to the band, but they played some really great band music. The playing level was high at both. I have heard that many of the winds at EMF are college kids. Is there a $ difference? Faculty preference? I don’t think you can go wrong at either.

A belated thank you to glassharmonica and team_mom for your advice. Unfortunately, the Philadelphia International Summer Music Festival Camp doesn’t quite line up with the my break between festivals, but I will keep it in mind as a filler festival in future years!

By the way, does anyone know of a short festival or masterclass happening between August 23 and September 5?

Thanks much!

Violaguy, if you are in high school you might want to check out the MacDuffie Festival at Mercer University run by Robert MacDuffie. It’s over Labor Day-- my daughter went twice and thought it was wonderful.

Anyone know anything about the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute?

tomdug, there’s more information here: [National Symphony Orchestra: The National Symphony Orchestra National Trustees’ Summer Music Institute](http://www.kennedy-center.org/nso/nsoed/smi/)

Applicants send in an application with recording to state offices, which choose some to send on (possibly up to five?) from their state. Then from those the NSO chooses one student per state (depending on instrumentation) to attend the summer institute.

I think Cosmos maybe did this before? So she would be a good source about the experience, as I only know about the application process.

My son (cellist) has been accepted to the University of Nebraska Chamber Music seminar and to NYU’s String Quartet Program.

Yep I did the NSO Institute in 2008. It was really fun. There were 2 people from my state (New York), and one or two from every other state and I think one international student.

My HS D wanted to do something bigger and better this summer with her music (piano). Taking a cue from BassDad’s installment #5, she sent in applications to several very different summer programs. She has never done any kind of competition so we really had no idea whether she would get in anywhere or how she compares to others her age competing for these spots. The results are in now –

Accepted to Interlochen, Brevard, Eastman Music Horizons
Waitlisted at Eastern Music Festival

She is going to attend the Eastman program and we are thrilled for her.
Next on the agenda: choosing which colleges to start visiting next year (junior year). Hoping that summer will help sort that out and give us ideas!
A huge thank you to all who have helped out so far – I think we’re on the right track!

Hi Plumeria,

My daughter too was waitlisted for Orch and made Flute Institute and Wind Ensemble. We’re big time orchestra fans and not too big on Wind Ensemble, but as our daughter is in 9th grade and had no expectations of making it, we’re just thrilled to be part of it all. The Wind Ensemble does sound fantastic and I know a few people who speak very highly of the conductor. I’d pass on Starbucks and see the glass as half full. Besides, I want some high-achieving upperclassmen flutists there to mentor my daughter! Best of luck and hopefully we’ll meet you this summer.

Just want to know if anyone accepted by EMF orchestra program in 2011??

There’s at least one more in this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/12319033-post87.html</a> as well as post 96 above.
