Summer 2008!

Hey, I'm going to study a summer course in Yale. I want to know which is according to you guys the cheapest and/or best way to live in New Haven during the summer. Thanks!

Don't many summer students live on campus in the residential colleges?

yeah, but I find it quite expensive...I was thinking maybe I can sublet something...

Craigslist has many sublets that are probably a lot cheaper than the campus housing. It's probably best to look for one with other students (you can even screen people to try to find more interesting people that you would have more in common with and enjoy living with for the summer, perhaps even some with the same interests/hobbies/schedule as you), and ideally in an area close to the campus so you can participate in all of the summer activities. There are a ton of students around in the summer.

If you're a high school student I would really, really, really discourage living off-campus over the summer. Even if you're a bit older, I still wouldn't recommend it. First of all it might be very hard to find an apartment, since many of them are already rented out to Yale students.

Second, as much as New Haven isn't "that bad" as far as cities go, it is still a city, and it still has pretty high crime rates. ESPECIALLY off-campus. Some of the off-campus areas that are still close to classes are quite dangerous. Dixwell, for example, is notorious for being not-very-safe. I'm not sure that the minibus service runs in the summer, and you probably won't want to be walking back that far in the dark.

Not only that, but based on the "a crime recently happened in the Yale area" emails we get, waaay more muggings/etc. happen over the summer than during the year. So if off-campus areas aren't so hot during the academic year, they're probably worse over the summer.

The Yale campus is quite safe. There is thorough, widespread police patrol that keeps the crime rates low on the campus. I would definitely recommend just paying a bit extra money and living there.
