Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) & AP/EA @ Carnegie-Mellon?

do any of you guys know whats better YESS or SAMS or AP/EA?

Can someone get accepted to both SAMS and AP/EA? and attend both?

I believe you can be accepted to both SAMS and AP/EA, though if you are qualified for AP/EA you are probably over qualified for SAMS. If that is the case the admissions office will most likely place you in AP/EA. You will not be able to attend both because their schedules conflict.

bump..........

almost May...sort of.

my birthday is in may, hopefully carnegie mellon give sends me a nice birthday present :D

by birthday is also in May, the 15th. What day is yours?

the 4th. next sunday..... hopefully we'll know if we get accepted by then or not.

yeah, hopefully...

I telephoned the admissions office yesterday to speak with someone about whether or not CMU could expedite the acceptance notifications to enable students that have been accepted to the YESS program to make an election between YESS and CMU prior to YESS' reply date.

I expressed my surprise that CMU, knowing that students applying to the Summer Diversity program would in many cases also be applying to MITES or YESS, had established a notification date way after the acceptance due dates for MITES and YESS. I found this especially confounding since it appeared that MITES and YESS had taken that into account and made sure that students knew their status early enough to decide which of those programs to attend, should they have been accepted to more than both.

After several surprisingly frustrating (and somewhat negative in tone) conversations with staff and, eventually, someone with authority to make a difference, I was told in no uncertain terms that CMU knows about the earlier due dates for the other programs and NO, they will not let students know whether or not they have been accepted until sometime in early May.
CMU is going to do what CMU wants to do and, well, too bad.

I will say, the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

so, r u going to wait for CMU or go for YESS?

Hey guys i applied to the sams program...actually i decided to apply after reading this forum lol... and i was wondering if u could tell me what my chances are. Im just so tired of waiting

Teacher- Chemistry teacher- loves me but not a very good writer, it was too good
Ap Physics teacher- she likes me but i didnt read so i dont know how good it was

Essay 1 for diversity- talked all about my struggle to learn english after coming to amercia from bangladesh in 4th grade and alot of other stuff that made me diverse. It was preety good i decided to single space it... im not sure if that was what we should have done. very straightforward ; not very creative
Essay for sams- talked a lot about how math and science was the only thing that didnt change when i came to America and therefore i really liked it and excelled in it. It was really good according to my one of my english teachers

Ec- ton of community service- student government class treasurer , yearbook, national junior honor society, math league, qualified for NY state championship but didnt go.

Only sent in application a few days ago cause i found out about the program only recently and wrote a letter explaining why the application was so late.

you sent the application in a few days ago? I doubt they'll still consider you. But you never know...

today they finally changed the message on the application site to "Please note: we are no longer accepting applications." It's possible that you got really lucky and they received your app about 2 days before the arbitrary deadline. However, i think receiving your app may have reminded them to update the "we are still accepting applications" message.

wow that would be bad i am really mad that i didnt find out about the program earlier. Well i did call them today and they said that since my online application was sent like a week and half a ago ( i sent it when i first read about the program in this forum but had to wait till school reopened after spring break to get letters of reccomendations and transcript) they will still consider me. So i have my fingers crossed right now hopefully ill c u guys there.

Oh one more thing, do u think being from bangladesh, or asia help. I know that makes me a minority but i heared from a lot of people that being an asian minority doesnt help much when applying to programs for math and science because of the overwhelming numbers of asian in the math and science field. Is this true?

bump...almost May...

i dont think being asian helps tho i hope it doesn't hurt

i guess we should be happy that april only has 30 days and that may 1st isn't on a weekend

I predict that decisions will probably come around May 10...

hey guys,

i didn't apply for SAMS or AP/EA but I am guessing that if you did then that means that you applied for diversity program (which I did).

In that case, i might have some useful info:

I emailed one of the staff about a week ago and she said that the results should be about at the end of April. (note: should)

I'm guessing that tomorrow 28th monday is officially 'end of april'...

good luck to you all!

decisions as in "mailed" or "made"?
