Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) & AP/EA @ Carnegie-Mellon?

I'm sending my deposit today...

wow still no letter.......

^^ me too! It feels like its been forever

Best of luck to my fellow "waitlisters"

Wow I just found out that I got accepted to SAMS again. I went last year and only submitted the online app this year on a whim, but I didn't expect to be admitted again because I didn't update my transcripts. I won't be attending because I don't think that the senior curriculum will be challenging enough, so hopefully this will open up another slot for those on the waitlist. Nothing against the program, but I'll make better use of my time working in several for credit courses online and getting a job.

Congrats to all those that got in!

Technol21, can you give some insight on the junior program ? Did it meet your expectations last year ? I'm on the waitlist and still hoping that I can make it.

Thanks.

omg...has anyone started filling out the form booklet yet?...wayyyy too thick...i should probably start it soon though.

i have not received the packet yet...

Good news for you waitlisters....I'm not going to AP/EA. Hope one of you guys gets my spot! (I'm all about the CC solidarity)

sweet. hope you have a great time at LEAD

@jassen222: The junior program was relatively great. I felt that it covered a very diverse range of subjects and crammed in quite a bit in six weeks. My main issue was with the math restraints for juniors. The math covered is called "Conceptual Math" which barely touches Algebra II level thinking. It was a bore/breeze for most of us that were already heading in the Calculus direction, but the projects assigned still made it interesting. I know there were juniors that had previously advanced further in math than some of the seniors, but we were still forced into a lower level. Physics was by far the most challenging (I think most of us actually failed our first test), but we had all greatly improved by the end. The projects also provided a really unique experience in that we were exposed to a lot of various technologies and opportunities that you normally wouldn't cover in high school. Some projects were brief and a bit generalized, but still a great learning experience.

Generally, the program wasn't as challenging as I expected it to be, and the SAT course was annoying at times, but I don't want to give off a negative image. It was really a great experience, but I just would have preferred something that was a little more challenging in the sense that I could've learned more. There is a really strong sense of community and bonding, which really made the program significant, since I had never experienced anything like it. Everyone is at different levels when they enter, so to each his/her own.

Technol21, thanks a lot for your evaluation of the junior SAMS program. I understand what you're saying on the different levels especially for math. But at least you still gain something like the projects. How about the cognitive tutor software, is it really beneficial and do you get to keep a copy of the software ?

With the insight that you have given, now I'm really very interested to attend it. Hope that I make the cut off the waitlist.

hey guys,
i'm from CT and I got the letter last week saying i have been waitlisted for AP/EA, but I've decided to not to go because I'm going to a summer science/research program somewhere else.
so good news for you waitlistees for AP/EA! :)

i STILL haven't received my letter

same here, no letter

seriously..this is ridiculous.

hey, any of you know the admission rate for this year's diversity AP/EA? ive been told that applications bounced up pretty significantly and im just curious how competitive this year's group is.

i asked when i called in and they told me i was waitlisted, but the only response was what you already said, that "there was a large increase in applications."

i am not really surprised since they extended the application due date and also i still haven't received my letter yet

it sure would be nice to know if i got into this summer program before my summer vacation actually starts... not gonna happen though =(

bump because the thread is sliding too far down
