It really is but there are alot of other great ones around the country and other vol programs sponsored by the state like governor’s school during the summer.

Last year and the summer before that, there were about 70 students. There were about twenty juniors and 50 seniors. We had like 8 bi racial kids, a few native americans, 3-4 Caucasians, 3-4 asians, and after that the amount of Latinos and African americans were split evenly… and so is the gender ratio!

what are the chances of being accepted off of the waitlist?

Accepted to SAMS 2011!!!

I also applied to MITES but was rejected. Oh well- I feel like SAMS is a better fit for me anyway. People who were accepted/rejected for this year, would you mind posting stats?

I had a 1930 on the SATs (first time taking). I don’t remember right now what I got on which section but I know my Writing was in the low 700s, Math in the mid-600s and CR in the 600s as well. I have taken all Honors classes my entire high school career and this year I took AP American Studies.

Freshman year I got all As with the exception of a B+ in Geometry. Last year I totally sucked, As with a B- in Chem, B in Algebra II, and B+ in Intro to Business. This year I had one B, AP American Studies. I’ve improved so much in Math & Science (I’m taking Physics & Precalc this year)

My extracurriculars are pretty good, I’ve done a lot of volunteering and I have a lot of leadership roles. I’m half Italian half African American and I talked about that in my essays. I’m a female from CT and my income bracket is around 80,000.

I’m scared to be leaving home for 6 weeks because the longest I’ve been away from my family is a few days and it’s NEVER been with strangers. But, I’m SO excited for this experience! For those of you who will be attending, I’ll see you in Pittsburgh :D

i was accepted also. i have a 29 on act, 4.2 gpa, play violin, dance ballet, nhs etc.

Congratulations!!! I know a few of the people who will be seniors at the program this year and they are awesome there’s a group on facebook yall could join: Carnegie Mellon Pre-College/SAMS 2011

cheylisepink: don’t worry about leaving home. After the six weeks you won’t want to go home, I promise you. Pittsburgh will be your new home

yea don’t worry about being away from home a long time. i went to paris last year for one month&&didn’t want to leave. you won’t want to come home. are you a rising senior?

yeah, i’ll be a senior im really excited :D

2012 applications were just released on the SAMS and APEA websites, so I figure I can ask some questions.

1) I really want to do APEA, but don’t want to pay $8,000 for a summer program. If I apply through SAMS and select APEA, will I be considered for the full-tuition scholarship, even though I’m not a URM, and my family makes enough that I don’t truly need the scholarship?

2) Some other programs I’m considering applying to have earlier application dates, and will notify me of my acceptance/rejection much earlier than mid-May, when APEA will notify me. I want to have a backup plan if APEA rejects me, so is there any way to still apply to these other programs?

Thanks a lot. APEA sounds great!

Does anyone know of other science/math programs like this one that are free or low cost?

I have been all over their website can not seem to find the application deadline. Does anyone know when it is?

its due April 1st

they only select a few non URM. last year there were like one or two

Please specify non-URM. Does that mean, in cruder terms, white?
What’s even considered URM anyways?

Is there anyone else who is applying to the program as a sophomore?

raises hand
But I still need to do the essays. I’m just so unmotivated…

@Dan2014 You and I are on practically the same boat. I’m a sophomore and I’m procrastinating on my essays to the MAX. In fact, that’s what I should be doing right now…

Can anyone give some input regarding MICA Pre College Summer Art program vs. California College of Art. We’re looking for approx. 4 week program not quite as long (and expensive as RISD). Wondering about good teachers, classes, safety and the overall vibe of the experience. In addition to the work, is it a fun and positive adventure. Also has anyone gone to Cranbrook Summer Art? Thanks!

@gcowan2000 erm…maybe not the best thread? perhaps create a new thread?? and the internet is your best friend, by the way… :)

finishing up diversity essay…almost…there…just a few…more…
