Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) & AP/EA @ Carnegie-Mellon?

lol im jealous. i was admitted as an incoming freshman, but i don’t get to go live on campus until august =(. have fun!

bump.time for the new year!

are there any forms we should give to our teachers/counselor for the recommendations? or do we just ask them to write something on school letterhead? i looked on the website, but it just says we need the recommendations and what they should say, but not if there are forms that go along with them.

a letter of recommendation with a school letterhead will suffice

I’ll probably be applying. SAMS is my first choice, I’m not sure if I should go for AP/EA, I’d probably end up having to foot the bill from my part time job.

haha i don’t know if anyone will actually respond to this, but i really wanna go to this program, and i’m so nervous cause i didn’t realize that not that many asians get accepted. is that true?

kinda… last year i didnt se as many as i thought… like 2. but you still have a chance!

^ is 2 referring to SAMS or AP/EA?

i’m talking about SAMS. & that kinda sucks. ):

So I got waitlisted for this… and its either I do this summer thing or I get myself a job and do volunteer work. I really want to do this, but I need to apply for jobs or else it will be too late. So anyone know if there is any chance I will still get in? According to the letter only a “small” amount were waitlisted.

so… my odyssey (from, 3 years ago i think??) is documented somewhere in the 65 pages of this thread. Short story, it took them forever to tell me I was waitlisted, and then it took them even longer to tell me I was not accepted from the wait list. Don’t fret! I’m now attending CMU and perfectly successful, but don’t set you’re heart on coming here this summer

do anybody know how good the sat program is for juniors…i got a really low score and want to improve so that i can get into mites…i know they give a lot of homework but does it actually raise your score and if so how much? btw i got a 167 (So sad…not stanford material)

it’s good. it’s a kaplan course. the second day we take a diagnostic test and the SAT classes are a blend of juniors and seniors. i had a low PSAT score and when i went to SAMS my math went up 150 points and my CR went up 100 points. as long as you do your homework and go over the books once SAMS is over you’ll be fine.

Hey is anyone going through new York airport on the 26?

hi i’m applying to the SAMS program at Carnegie Mellon and i was wondering if anybody could give me any opinions about what the chances of me getting in are:

& in final stages of editing my own scientific article

thanks!

Did you apply? If not, your chance of getting in is zero.

Otherwise, you’re fine. SAMS is probably too easy for you, though.

Yes, I applied.

What do you mean by “SAMS is probably too easy” for me. I read on the program description that a course on calculus would be offered. Does that mean something like Calculus AB?
If I do get in, would it still be worth my time to attend? The program itself looks pretty interesting and additionally, it’s free, which I heard is always a big plus when applying for colleges.

calc is for the seniors (rising jrs) and if you have really good stats u should prob go for ap/ea

CONGRATS SAMS 2011!!! I promise this will be the best summer you will have. When you go back to school you’ll wonder why the kids you met during the summer aren’t around you constantly. SAMS at cmu is legit a nerd’s teenage dream
I’m a SAMS alum from the summers of 2009 and 2010. If you have ANY questions about the program, social life, what to bring, etc feel free to message me or anything like that

And please don’t worry if you don’t get in. I know several of my friends who didn’t get in and theyre at MIT, cmu, and all that jazz. You will be fine. The talent that you have makes you successful, not the program you attend. Pleeeeeeeeeease remember that! and as crazy as this sounds, if you have super nice stats and don’t get in, it’s not because of you - some people need the program so they can get on your level of ECs and SAT scores :)

Another note: if you get rejected from SAMS and into AP/EA consider yourself lucky. not only does AP/EA take less classes and have more free time than SAMS, BUT they stay in nicer dorms.
