I'm studying Mechanical Engineering right now. Right now my GPA is a 2.93 which I'm really disappointed. I know for a fact I can bring that up to atleast a 3.2 or a 3.3 at the end of freshman year. I want to know if theres anything I can start doing to get ahead. I heard internships would be really hard to get after freshman year. So what would be the best thing to do, try to get a summer job thats somewhat associated with my major or what?

Aren’t internships traditionally sought out for the summer after sophomore year? By then you would have more knowledge to offer employers.

Normally, employers don’t hire college students who just finished their freshmen year since they don’t have as much knowledge as others (unless you have inside connections). Since you said you’re disappointed about your GPA, you could take summer courses at your university (if offered) which could help boost your GPA and get you ahead in your curriculum.

Hard but not impossible. Make sure you put a decent resume together, and give it a shot.

Should that no work out, taking classes makes sense if there will be something useful. Though you sound like you might be done with all your prereq classes and all so there might not be depending on your school.

If you’ve built any sort of rapport with anyone in the MechE department a good option might be to ask if they have any research opportunities, even if they’re unpaid. If you haven’t, you should try to in Winter.
