this december i will start applying for the 10 week internships for summer 2008, the one firm that's on my mind is Blackstone.
my question is if my GPA at the time i am applying is say 3.3, will they reject my resume automatically? because my gpa is below 3.5?

I have other good things in my resume and right now i am doing an internship at a regional IB (although its mainly screening for hedge funds and calling them etc)
I think if they actually take the time to read my cover letter I will be in a much better position to get the intership.

so again my question is will Blackstone or other firms will just throw away my resume when they see my gpa is 3.3?

also, is it better to go in person and apply?

blackstone is tough. do you go to an ivy-league school i.e. harvard or wharton? if not, and with your GPA, it might be extremely tough. then again, it is never impossible. good luck.

UCSD :(
i mean i know its going to be very tough, but i am just hoping that i atleast get an interview, cuz if i do i think i'll have a much better chance of getting the internship

also i had another question if anyone can provide feedback, right now i am econ-math double major, reason i am also doing math is that some friends told me that a math major looks very solid on a resume as IB firms look for people with analytical skills etc etc, BUT the math major is pulling down my gpa, if i drop it i'll probably be able to take my gpa between 3.4 and 3.5, i have not taken as many courses in math yet...u guys think i should drop it if its ruining my gpa?

or stick with it and finish it even though it means my gpa's a few points lower?

You should include your Econ Major GPA and a list of the courses you have taken. Second, I've never seen a GPA on the cover letter before. Don't make your cover letter. Talk about your COURSE LOAD, WORK EXPERIENCE and SKILLS on the cover letter. For example (obviously not the same level as Blackstone), I'm a rising sophomore interning at a VC backed, start up internet technology firm. I went to a 4 tier public school (transferring to WashU next year) and had a cumulative GPA of 3.54. My Econ GPA in 4 4000 level classes for the year was a 4.0 and I have a wide variety of comp.sci/developer skills so I included all that information on my cover letter. I talked about my facility in applications like Hoovers, Bloomberg, Perl etc. not my cumulative GPA.

The problem with that is many ibanks, almost all of them IIRC, explicitly ask for your GPA to do their initial screening.

Its going to be extremely difficult to land an internship at a big firm, boutiques are more likely (although still difficult). Your major is good, but GPA is lower than the average and attend a school that isn't recruited or sought out by banks.

Blackstone asks for your overall GPA on their online application

so basically the decision i have to make is this, which is better:

3.5 GPA in an Economics major
or
3.3 GPA in an Econ-Math math

??
