Summer Analyst Recruiting - Starting Late

Hey everyone,

Since I was abroad this past semester, I have just started preparing for summer internships. I know this is really late in terms of networking, but what is the best way to start preparing? Also, is it bad to apply to both IBD and Sales and Trading positions? I come from a target school and my GPA is about a 3.8, just for some information.

Thanks a lot!

Email alums asking for informational phone conversations. You need to choose between IBD and S&T. At some banks they don’t care if you apply to both, but at most they do and view it as a negative.

Resume drop deadlines at target schools have either just passed or are coming up very soon - check at your career services office. If your school is a target, you should take advantage of on campus recruiting.

Thanks for the advice! For the informational interviews, should I be trying to contact analysts mostly, or higher ups like Associates, Vice Presidents, or MDs? One more question, what’s the best way to learn about the markets given the short time between interviews? Thanks!

Contact analysts. read the Wall Street Journal and Dealbook to get up to speed on the markets.

If you attend a target, you shouldn’t have to do call anyone up. Try to attend as many recruiting or informational events as possible and chat up the reps there and follow up with emails to keep in touch. Contact your career office, they should be able to set up mock interviews.

Resume drop deadlines aren’t for another week or so.

As for networking/calling up alumns, there not much point right now. Also, since you go to a target, those informational interviews won’t be that useful anyways since they’re more for students from non-target schools where companies don’t recruit

This is wrong.
These are opportunities for you to network with the people inside the companies. A lot of informational events are school specific, that is they come to the target school and do their presentations. Non-target students are not invited.

Resume drop deadlines have indeed passed for some firms/some target schools (my employer at my alma mater, for one). The deadline varies depending on when the firm is scheduled to interview on campus, and you need to check with your own school’s career services office.
