Summer at Oxford

Does anyone know about summer programs at Oxford University? Which ones are the best? Are any of you guys applying/going? Is taking courses at Oxford beneficial to college admissions? Or does going to Oxford for the summer look superficial to colleges and a waste of money? And finally, what should I do?????

A girl I know went to Oxford last summer, she said the courses were fine but it was more about the experience about being in a different country, and so forth (although I believe they only went to London twice?) The Oxford program (if you are not applying for a scholarship) is supposedly not very selective, but I hear the Oxford campus is very nice, and the courses are great.

how does the oxford program compare to the ones at say, harvard or yale or stanford, etc..?

I know a kid that went and he said it was great.

is this the oxbridge summer program that you're talking about?

Is there another one? He just said he did a summer program at Oxford.

my cousin's friend did it and she said she loved it. i was planning on applying, but its a lot of money especially since they dont include airfare to london and back, but if you're willing to spend for it, its def worth it. they have the programs at oxford, cambridge, and paris.

if ur talking about the oxbridge experience, my cousin did it a couple years ago and loved it. it does cost a ton of money, but i guess it's great if u can fork the money. She said a lot of her friends were incredibly rich people.

oh! If you go, my friend whose half British half Swedish, lives in Waterloo, Belguim is going!! her name's Johanna Aberg, but aka Jajja, she's 18. Say hi to her!!! haha, I miss her!!

other then that i know nothing about it, sorry.

I looked at these, having done a 5 week summer program at the American University of Paris last summer and being interested in something similar. The Oxford programs AFAIK don't offer college credit and the courses seemed to be a joke.

I'm applying to a Canadian high school in Switzerland for next year (I'm a junior this year) but if I don't get in there or otherwise cannot go, I will probably apply to a US college summer program like Harvard SSP or Summer@Brown.

does doing a program such as oxford impress colleges or not really?

Not really, since programs like this aren't very selective and basically admit anyone with the money.

my cousin got into stanford, but i'm 100% sure it wasn't becuz of the oxbridge experience. not to denigrate the program, a lot of them are cash cows that attract people by their name and charge a ton of money

david06, when you went to the american univeristy of paris, was it for some program called summer study?? well, what'd you think of it?? how does the oxford programs compare to going to an american university during the summer like harvard's ssp or something??

paris: I PM'd you a bunch of stuff about the AUP program. I rambled and only gave a very limited overview of the program, sorry, it's 2:30 AM. if you are interested I can tell you (or anyone else that is interested) more about it.

Is Oxford essentially CTY for older kids? (but does Oxford hae some selection criteria?) CTY isn't competitive once a person's scores are in the acceptance range - and then it's all who has the most money (and thus I missed out on a great experience - my parents refused to send me to CTY :(:(:().

bump!!!!!!!

::bumps:: :)

I did the "Oxford Tradition" (Oxbridge Academic Programs) the summer before junior year

BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE SO FAR! hmm, well at least the best summer i've had so far--and I still keep in touch with people I met there. I've seen some people since it ended (like my roomate) even if we live far away and stuff.

It was AMMAAZZZING i highly recommend it, and if you have ANY questions at all FEEL FREE To email me: pixiedanzer@yahoo.com

oh in terms of comparison?

this past summer i did the JSA program @ Stanford, and yeah that was extremely fun too, but in a different way.

I wish what i had done was done the Stanford program first and then the Oxford... Stanford was a lot more academically demanding, and I learned a lot no doubt (especially in my main interest of study: politics,) but the activities were pretty restricted to the campus, and the policies were very strict.

Oxford, I had the whole city to explore, we took trips to London, and I remember having a lot more freedom.

Do colleges look highly upon it? I honestly don't know, but if you do choose to go--go not becuase of looking good for college, but becuase of the EXPERIENCE. TO tell you the truth, the program isn't super selective--if you have the money and apply early enough (and as long as you don't have like AWFUL grades in the subject you want to study) you'll most likely get accepted--but yes they do give out lots of scholarships, so try applying early for those. I think it's only harder now becuase more and more apply every year as the program becomes more well known.

The academic aspect of the program was really intense and enriching too, it seriously depends on the major/minor you decide to take (i took politics&economics and my minor was war in world history), how hard the workload is etc... (my workload was pretty easy compared to students taking biology) I loved being in England, and yes the majority of the student body was from the US--but all over the US. It was a really cool to meet new people everyday, and i don't remember meeting any unhappy camper LoL.
