Has anyone here taken college courses during summer session the summer before their freshman year? Would you recommend it?

I know WU in St. Louis actually has a program for students to do this, and I'm planning on being a pre-med...and I'd just as soon get some of the required pre-med courses out of the way while getting the feel for campus.

I didn't know exactly which forum to post this in, but any advice on this would be great, especially from people that have done it.

Yes, I did take one basic 200-level English composition course, the summer before my freshman year. I would definitely recommend taking courses that summer, but I think that it would probably be best to take something really interesting, maybe something challenging, to get yourself really ready and motivated for your freshman courses - and, it will give some incentive through the stupid introductory freshman classes, in that you'd have experienced a more challenging, and, hopefully, interesting, college course the summer before your freshman year. Don't be afraid to take lots of courses - I only took 5 credit-hours, that first summer, and I was feeling really underworked, by the end.

hey billybobbyk,
i just found out at the WUSTL summer program yesterday...it sounds really appealing. i think i might do it...
but i want to find some students to ask about it, and get more info of course...

I don't recommend doing so because like Vinny said, you'll be in college soon enough. I know that for me nearly every summer in high school was about doing what it took to get into college-SAT prep, working, etc. The summer after senior year was such a relief. Have FUN. Go crazy. Get drunk. BE WITH YOUR FRIENDS. Enjoy life. Plus, those things tend to be quite expensive.

Take the summer off. I did take a course, but it was weight lifting so it was something enjoyable. I didn't work that much compared to the past two summers and spent a lot of quality time with my friends.

This summer I'll be taking a class, but only one. I just want to make up for the three credits that didn't transfer from my old school (since I don't want to take 18 credits per semester). The class will probably be history or geography.
