Summer Class at a CC

Hi, I am an incoming freshman for the fall semester. During this summer, I plan to take a history class at a nearby community college to fulfill by history breadth requirement. Do I need to notify the admissions office that I will be taking this course? If so, by when do I have to do this? I already sent in a transcript of courses I've completed at this CC and I understand that after I finish my summer course, I will have to submit another transcript to Cal. Will the grade that I receive on this course affect my admissions at all? If I fail, will my admissions get rescinded? Will the grade that I receive be factored into my GPA at Cal? Is it ok for me to drop the course at the beginning of the term if I end up not liking it? Thanks for answering my questions :)

Anything taken off campus will not factor into your GPA. (unless its another UC campus)

if you were granted admission based on what you already put in the app, they don’t need to know about any additional stuff. Only if it replaces things you listed or if you drop things off your list. Adding is good. no grade from that class will affect your acceptance.

The grade will NOT be added into your Cal GPA. They only factor in classes at Cal (and certain approved Extension classes) to the GPA. You might get credit towards obligations or pre-reqs by submitting the CC transcript, but you won’t see the grade mixed into your Berkeley GPA.

If you drop it, or flunk it, no need to report it to Cal afterwards either. You only submit classes to get credit. However, later in your career this might matter. Medical school or law school applicants have to list every college taken and submit transcripts - thus this WILL impact your overall college GPA as viewed by med or law school admissions officers.

However, the history breadth is not satisfied just by taking any history course elsewhere. First, lets get clear that you are talking about entering the college of letters and sciences, as the breadth requirements are different in the other colleges. Second, lets make sure you mean the historical studies breadth requirement, one of the seven breadth requirements of L&S. [Degree Requirements-7-Course Breadth Historical Studies Requirement](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/breadth7/hs.html)

Since the list is pretty specific - explicitly naming courses that qualify - you want to be totally sure they class will get you credit for that breadth. Might have to use [Welcome to ASSIST](http://assist.org) to verify that which CC classes will match Cal classes on that list.

Anyone done this - not transfer students, but entering freshmen? Any advice for the OP?

Thanks Rider. I did use assist.org to verify that the course I am taking will fulfill the historical studies breadth. So for right now, I can just take the course without notifying Cal. After I finish and receive my grade, I will just send in my transcript and Cal will give me credit for that course, correct? It will fulfill that breadth requirement but will not factor into my GPA? I also heard about not taking too many courses because there is a limit of how many units you can take and something about having to graduate if you have a maximum amount of units. Can someone explain this as well. Thanks.
