Summer College Cornell University 2015

My son has applied for the business class - 3 weeks in July. 1) Is it hard to get into? He is a B plus student in a private high school that is hard. 2) I read that it is very hot and no air co in the dorms. Can someone comment if this is an issue. 3) Is it fun? (hopefully). 4) Is it worth the money 6K Thanks, Mom

I can’t comment on the Cornell summer program, but I’m sure some folks on here can. My D did the summer program at University of Chicago for two summers and loved it. And no, the dorms were not air conditioned where she was, but it’s not a deal breaker. It was definitely worth the cost, IMO.

1.) It is not very hard to get into- it is also no indication of whether or not you’ll get into Cornell.
2.) Staying up in Ithaca over the summer, it honestly depends on where you are from. I had no issue not having air conditioning. Just make sure you bring (or rent) a fan.
3.) Yes, there are also many activities that go on. There is a least always one big event/trip over the weekend. (Things like going to Buttermilk falls, BBQ, a big dance party) as well as smaller events hosted by the RCA’s.
4.) It depends. If you have the money, yes, but if it’s a financial burden, don’t do it, save the money for college.

How much spending money should I bring? I disagree with the selectivity of Cornell because some of these programs like RABS are really hard to get into.

Do kids get to go into new york city at all?

Summer is pretty hot in Ithaca, but it is beautiful! He will probably have an amazing time so the experience is priceless regardless of where he ends up. Having the Cornell name on any resume is impressive.

CUSC is a lot of fun. It’s not that hard to get into. I went last summer and met people who have dreamt of going to Cornell their whole lives and people who would never want to go to an ivy league for college.

It does get hot, but he’ll manage. I had to walk a mile there and back everyday for class, and I was fine. The rooms may get warm, but a fan will help. Overheating in the dorms wasn’t really an issue. There are some AC units, and your son can always escape to the air conditioning of RPCC to cool off.

It is lots of fun and I do think it’s worth the time and money. I made some great friends while I was there, and it doesn’t look too bad on a college application either. A bunch of people who went last summer as juniors, including myself, will be going to Cornell for college this fall. It was a great preview of college life and Cornell itself.

I can’t remember how much spending money I brought, but I didn’t bring too much. I mostly used my own money when I went to collegetown with friends, when we got insomnia cookies, and when I bought things at the bookstore. My parents gave me a pre-paid credit card to use, which worked well. There is also a trip to NYC that you can go on for some extra money. I forget if you sign up for it when you sign up for the actual program or if you sign up when you get to Cornell.
