So my school offers many options when it comes to summer classes and I’m trying to take as many as possible due to the fact that I’m going to have to take 1/2 (maybe all) of the fall semester off. I don’t plan on working this summer so all of my attention can be focused on school.
The schedule I’m looking at seems pretty intense (13 hours) however, I’d only be taking two classes at a time MAX. There will be 3 consecutive ‘four-week’ classes with an ‘eight-week’ class thrown on top of 2 of them. (I’d like to add that the eight-week course is probably going to be more of a review for me. It’s elementary French 1; I’ve taken French 1-3 in high school.)
What do you guys think? Am I crazy or does it seem manageable with the way it’s broken up? I really don’t have plans for the summer and where I live it’s usually too hot to go out and do anything so I don’t mind spending hours in my schools library lol.
Firstly I am assuming you are either enrolling this fall or not…you can’t take half a semester off.
Secondly…if you have taken French 3 in HS, are they really going to let you take French 1? Is that allowed?
Remember that a normal course is 3 hours in class (plus per week over 15 week. In addition for every hour in class, it is expected that you have at least 2 hours of homework, so that is 6 hours of HW/studying/reading per week.So you are compressing that into a quarter of the time…so 12 hours of class time per week and 24 hours of HW…so that is 36 hours so basically a full time job.
The 8 week course is 6 hours a week + 12 hours of homework/practice…
Personally I think 3 back to back 4 week courses is too much, much less laying an 8 week course on that. I think you would get burnt out.
Yeah, I’m thinking it might be too much… It would just be so nice to be able to get these over with.
@bopper my college offers block courses, some for the first half of the semester and some for the second half so I can actually go half of the semester if they are offering the courses I need.
Also it’s been a little over 4 years since I’ve practiced French so my academic councilor suggested I take elementary 1 as a refresher, which I agree with.
I have thought about the fact that I might get burned out and I agree it would be tough not to get burned on such a schedule.
If you think about it, a quarter at a 4 year college is 10 weeks and most students take around 12-16 units a quarter. It shouldn’t be too bad tbh. I’m taking around 6 units during the summer but I’m not super scared since my 4 year was on the quarter system where I took 12 units in 10 weeks…
If you truly have no other engagements including work, and if you’re already decent in French, this will be fine.
I’ve taken a fair number of college classes. Because you spend so much time in the classroom, there really isn’t much reading required. (I never opened my geology textbook. Actually I never even bought it.)
As long as you can get your butt in the seat for the required hours, homework is kind of a breeze.
