Hi i'm going to be a sophmore in college next year and I want to transfer out of my current college. I'm planning on taking on a full summer course load and only taking fall semester next year, will this be detrimental to my application? basically i'm just finishing sophmore year early. I'm only worried because my friends said that grad schools don't like courses taken in the summer ie. Medical School and i'm wondering if that also applies to transfers. Can anyone speculate? I noticed that there are a few ex-admissions officers that lurk around here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

BUMP PLEASE HELP!!! Summer starts sooooon

Why can’t you just continue taking even higher level courses in the spring? I think colleges will just question your decision to stop after the fall, unless you’re doing something meaningful with that time.

I can speak for medical school. There isn’t any issue with taking courses in the summer, the issue comes when you take summer classes at a school other than your home school. For example, if you attend a 4yr institution but take a full load in the summer at a CC, that will be a major negative. They will think you wanted to avoid rigorous work and get an easy A. I imagine most professional schools will agree. However, if you take these courses at your 4yr institution, or another school of the same caliber there isn’t an issue, ditto if you attend CC and take them at a 4 yr, or attend CC and will apply as a junior, you can take it at your CC.

However the next problem is you hope to not taking any courses in the spring… You can’t avoid that. You have to have continuous enrollment, unless there are some extenuating circumstances, which I can’t think of a single one you would know 6 months ahead of time? Most schools require that no matter how many hours you take in the summer you must have full time enrollment in the terms, med schools in general say the 12cr minimum but there may be specific preferences. You can’t finish sophomore year early and take a break then start junior yr in the fall. You have to continue and get that “break” in the end, in the form of graduating early.

I was thinking about working and travelling before transferring to whatever school i got into.

My niece worked and took a trip to Europe between schools, but she did it in the summer, not during the regular terms. If you need to work full-time for longer than the summer months to pay for school, maybe you could take a deferral year. If you just want to travel, look into study abroad programs. One of my nephews spent a term in Italy, another is in Ireland. What school are you attending and where do want to attend?
