Heya! I’m a student who’s here on Financial Aid, and basically have no family resources to draw upon whatsoever. Not even a place to live aside from my dorm room. So I’m a bit worried about what I’m going to do during the summer. Does anyone know if USC has summer jobs that include housing, or any other summer job that pays well enough to survive in LA for the summer?
I would also like an answer, if anyone who responds can tag me in their comment
You will move out of your dorm at the end of the spring semester. I would look into subletting a room in one of the houses around campus. There are many privately owned houses that rent the entire house to students from Aug. 1 - July 31 or Aug 16 - Aug 15 (one year). Many students leave to go home for the summer but they still have to pay their rent on the place they are leasing so they sublet. You may be able to find a room from between $500 - $800 a month. Keep in mind this does not include utilities. A $500 a month room is much cheaper than what you paid at the dorms.
Job-wise I know that the career center will post jobs on campus. My daughter was an RA for summer programs for about 5 weeks last summer and they put her up in the dorms, fed her and she earned about $1,500. That job was posted on the USC Career Center website in January. I say this because you have to start looking early. The job application closed 4 months before the job even took place. But, it was only for 5 weeks, not the entire summer.
Another option could be to sublet a room and go to summer school. If financial aid will pay for it they might arrange for you to get work study.
The bookstore is open during the summer. They pay about $9 an hour but I don’t know how many hours you could be hired for. If you don’t have a job now you could see if you can work at the bookstore now, which could lead you into something with more hours for the summer.
Keep an eye out on the Career Center job posting site constantly.
I know there are jobs for students when soon-to-be freshman come for their summer Orientation. I think you have to go through a big semester training for them. Try to find out about those. Look at USC Office of Orientation Programs, at the bottom of their site I just saw that there are applications available September 24th, so that’s very soon. The Freshman Orientation goes on for a huge part of the summer. I would check this out for sure as it may be your best bet!
Good luck!
