Summer Film Programs for HS Juniors/Seniors

Hi I’m looking for recommendations on good summer film institutes/intensives. Looking for something beyond basics or an introduction into digital filmmaking; ideally interested in intermediate to advances High School filmmakers where the program includes making something for your college portfolio. Any recommendations? The threads on this topic are really old so hoping for someone with more recent experience…considering the following programs:

Univ. of North Carolina School of the Arts
Emerson College
Chapman
UCLA
USC (the 16/17 year old available sections)
Interlochen

Thanks!

I spent a lot of time researching Summer film intensives for S19, including the ones you mentioned. Cost was the biggest factor for us, so we looked for summer film programs with scholarships. NYU has a single (competitive) full scholarship available for their summer filmmaking program.

I don’t know if the app is still open, but Anthony Quinn Foundation provides scholarships specifically for summer intensives.

@cruzanlady
NHSI at Northwestern has a summer film program (https://nhsi.northwestern.edu/film-video-division/). The EA deadline just passed, but the regular admission app is still open for Summer.

Thank you— I had looked at Tisch too but yes, very expensive. Will check out Northwestern — thanks!

University of Miami also has a filmmaking summer intensive

Thanks @romns116–we live in FL so I don’t think UMiami would be all that attractive. Do you know anyone that has attended the summer program at Northwestern? I wish I had discovered it early enough to do EA. I’m afraid if we wait to see if admitted now my miss out on other programs which could fill up.

@cruzanlady not personally, but a few CC’ers have had their children attend NHSI Summer film. Here’s one thread:

Chapman’s Summer Film Academy is absolutely amazing! The opportunities they give the students to learn easily top any other film program (Ive also done UCLA’s) and you feel like you are actually a part of both a film set, and the school. The faculty the runs the program consists of grad students, alumni, and professors who are extremely dedicated to teaching students and getting the most out of their experience.

Another thing to note is that pretty much no film school will ask for a portfolio! For most you have to actually make a film for your application

I too heard wonderful things about Chapman’s Summer Film Academy. They didn’t have any scholarships available, so that meant it was off the list (for Summer).

S19 just got confirmation from UT Austin Summer FIlm Camp (Adv Film Production). He’s excited! They told us RTF instructors and grad students teach the summer programs. I wonder if (hope that) making a good impression would help his app chances for Fall 2019.

@quentinRJJA Do you mean none of the summer programs ask for a portfolio? If so I did notice that although both Northwestern and UNCSA asked for a resume and pretty extensive description of experience. For UNCSA it just helps you get into the more advanced filmmaker group but Northwestern seems pretty competitive to get in. I didn’t consider Chapman or UCLA only because they were only 2 weeks–was looking for something longer–but both are obviously great programs.

No, Film SCHOOLS don’t ask for a portfolio. Resumes are written while portfolios are a collection of works.

@romns116 --Just wanted to say Thank You for letting me know about the Northwestern NHSI film program. My daughter applied in late January and she was just accepted. She is super excited and it sounds like a great program. Would not have known about it if not for this site and your suggestion–so thank you! Where did your son decide to go this summer–UT Austin, is that right?

@cruzanlady you’re welcome! Congratulations to your D for getting into the NHSI program! She is going to have a wonderful time. Please post updates and her thoughts on the filmmaking program.

Yes S19 will be at the UT Austin Filmmaking Camp, possibly the screenwriting camp also.
