I’m kinda thinking of taking two courses over the summer just because I want to keep busy but I don’t want to get a job over this summer. I want to take courses at my nearest college which is Montclair state university. It’s only 15 minutes away so it’ll be very convenient for me. I want to take 2 courses each worth 4 credits. According to this chart, the cost will be $2,746 in total. Hopefully there are no hidden fees. So I was wondering, will I be paying that out of pocket or can I ask for financial aid for that? The reason why I don’t think it can get covered by finaid is because I didn’t apply for it over the summer and I’m sure it would have had to be done a few months ago maybe, I don’t know. The other thing, is there any little assists that I can request like tap/pell/ or something else? Or are they too late also.
By the way, last day for registration for the summer courses is June 12 so I have about 5 days to go before registering.
Did you use all your aid during the school year? Pell, loans, state grants, etc.
You need to add Montclair to your fafsa filing for 2016-17, and then talk to the financial aid office at Montclair. Summer aid is hard to come by
Have you asked RPI if you’re allowed to take courses at other schools? Some universities might not allow that. They may comsider you a transfer student and you could lose your financial aid.
Students have a limited # of semesters of aid. If you use your Pell in the summer, you may run out later on. If you need money to afford classes and you’re Pell eligible, you’re better off getting a job this summer.
This student is a matriculated student at another college.
I don’t think he can receive financial aid at his local university…because he isn’t a matriculated student there.
@kelsmom?
This will be my first year in college, I just turned 18, I applied for aid to RPI and only just recently came up with the idea of taking summer courses. It sounds like I won’t get any aid since you say I had to do it earlier.
From my research I think this is the key. I believe you are permitted 8 full-time semesters for college. Taking courses over the summer uses up one of those eight. A full-time semester is considered 16 credits so if you take less than 16 they they allow you to roll-over unused credits but it usually winds up shorter than if you just didn’t use them. From the research I’ve done it turns out it’s cheaper if I just don’t take the courses or that I just pay cash.
I think I’m going to pass on the summer courses for now.
I’m an entering student in the fall for RPI, sorry it wasn’t in the original post but I edited it a few times before posting it and I guess it was removed in one of the edits. Yeah, I decided not to take summer courses, I’ll just work instead. Thanks
I would get a job, you will need startup money for college, and it’s nice to have some spending money.
