Summer Freshman Class?

--I'm going to be a senior in high school---

From the Freshman Information Session that I attended when I visited UT, I gather that all TX residents who apply for the fall are considered for the summer class, just to clear up some of the fall classes. Well, I've visited UT and I LOVE, LOVE the school. I would happily start my freshman year next summer and get some basic freshman/intro courses out of the way. Would this--applying for the summer and not the fall--hurt or help my application in any way? I'm an out-of-state resident (Louisiana, nowhere special, UT gets lots of LA apps from what I understand) with a good slew of EC's and leadership positions, a 28 on the ACT, honors/GT/AP courses; I'm convinced the competition is rough for non-residents like myself.

How does housing work for the summer freshman class? I've read and read the info on UT's Be A Longhorn page, but I can't gather that much from it.

Thank you so much. UT is an amazing school. I love academics, but I'm not the typie who is willing to go without sleep for 4 days to pull an A. UT seems like the kind of school where I could do well, with good academics, and still have a semblance of a life.

Hi! I'm a summer freshmen, maybe I can answer some of your questions.

Most of the summer freshmen class (this year anyway) is populated with the people who weren't quite top 10% but were still extremely strong applicants.

Basically, for the most part in the summer everyone takes 3 courses. these classes run Monday through thursday with a few exceptions and are really no more than an hour to an hour and a half. Classes generally dont feel very long. The courses are taught by some pretty good professors (I have Benjamin Rider for Contemporary Moral Problems and he's a really cool professor).

Grading for the summer is pretty simple, many liberal arts courses dont even have finals and are generally graded by mid terms/quizzes.

Summer freshmen who live on campus are in the honors dorms, jester, and san jacinto. I live at The Castilian but have tons of friends at the on campus dorms.

I think you'd do well at UT, and if you have any questions feel free to post here.

Thank you so much for your reply! It's great to hear from someone who is a summer freshman!
Are summer freshman given any preference for the dorms they stayed in during the summer for the fall housing? I know they're guarranteed housing, but I was just wondering.

Sounds like it's fun, really relaxed (which I've heard most summer terms are). I'm beginning to really love this idea of going to UT in the summer (though my friends think I'm insane).

I'm not exactly sure on on how housing preference works... I think we get a preference but I'm not 100% positive.

If you're a Summer Freshman you get to stay in the same room you were assigned to for your entire freshman year, if you prefer. And if you were assigned to San Jacinto, YOU PREFER! San Jacinto is the newest, nicest, and biggest (room space-wise) dorm on campus, which means Summer kids get dibs on the best rooms.

They also register for Fall classes before any other freshmen, so they get a shot at all the classes before they fill up.

It does have its benefits!
