I’m trying to decide what hall to stay in and I’ve heard a lot of things about Degraff for summer such as safety or lack of, great social scene, next to the strip, etc. But is it too far away from classes? Are other halls better such as Reynolds? Also, any tips for summer freshmen would be greattt! Thanks!!
The biggest tip I can give you would be to just spend a couple days walking around campus and getting a feel for where things are. Summer is a time when campus is relatively dead- the vast majority of people are gone, lots of departments are offering at most a couple courses, and you’re likely just getting rid of some of your gen ed requirements. You’re also probably only taking 6 or 7 credit hours since it’s a 6-week summer session.
When you move in, go out and walk around campus. It’ll be hot- end of June so probably upper 90s or lower 100s for highs- but go out, walk around and learn how the campus is laid out. Sure, you’ll want to learn where your classes for the summer are first but learn where your department is, where your advisor’s office is, where your college is located (Arts & Sciences, Communication, Social Sciences, etc).
You have a slight advantage in that you are basically getting a six week preview of campus that those starting in the Fall don’t have. While Orientation will probably teach you the location of some different things around campus, you won’t really have enough time to put that info to good use.
As for where to live, I’d probably suggest either Degraff or Bryan Hall. I never lived in either one, but Degraff is the newest building available for summer (unless you’re in CARE). Bryan Hall is the oldest building on FSU’s campus, at over 100 years old. Plus, I believe that summer would be the only time that you could live in Bryan Hall without having to be part of the living-learning community.
