Inspired by momof3sons thread, I thought of asking CC poster for help.

S1 is applying for an internship at Yale, and I am looking into housing in case he gets it. He is a sophomore, 16 years old. Living in a dorm with other HS students would be ideal, but from what I can tell, Yale offers housing only to HS students in their summer school. They offer "summer visitor" housing in grad student housing, but this would probably not work well, even if he were allowed to use it, because the other people there would be so much older. If living on campus is not possible, then living with a family would probably be the next best arrangement. He is too young to be in an apartment, of course.

He is quiet and serious, and goes to bed quite early. On school nights he goes to bed between 9:30 and 10:30 - if he stays up later, he can't get up in the morning. He would not fit into a "rowdy" environment.

Do any of you have any ideas?

If he’s as studious as you say, he’s probably better off in grad student housing than with the high schoolers.

I think “summer visitors” might mean visiting scholars who would be fine with graduate students, not high schoolers.

Hi, Our daughter attended the summer school program there after her junior year. The dorms seemed to be well supervised. Lights were out at 11:00 and the RA’s check that all students are in and accounted for. Our daughter did not find it a rowdy atmosphere. i hope you are able to work out accommodations.

I agree that “summer visitors” are almost certainly visiting faculty, and not HS students. My take is that they do not offer housing for “random” HS students who are not part of a program.

Thanks for the information on the summer school, wedgedrive. I looked into that, and it is only for kids who have completed 11th or 12th grade. If this internship comes through, I will look into whether they would allow him to stay in those dorms. It sounds a bit like CTY, which he did for two summers and loved.

The “rowdy atmosphere” I was thinking of was off-campus housing.

He is “studious” in the sense that if he is able to talk himself into this internship, he will spend every waking hour in the lab, or doing relevant reading. But I think he will need some company. It would be ideal if he could stay in the dorm with a similarly geeky kid who is also doing an internship.

My d also attended yale summer as a rising h.s. senior and loved the dorm expereince there. She found it to be a great environment, and managed well by the RAs. I would not hesitate if you can get that housing—I would certainly ask, you never know…
I saw a photo of the rooms nad they were nice.

Thanks, tehocmom. If the internship comes through, the first thing I will do is check on whether S1 can join the HS summer school kids in the dorm. Who knows, if they have room maybe they will allow him to do it. It would be the perfect solution.
