Summer housing in Austin, TX

S has an internship in Austin this summer. Anyone very knowledgeable about the city, better parts of town, areas to avoid, etc? He’ll be working in the heart of downtown (Frost Bank building) and wants to be close to work, nightlife, etc.

@MaineLonghorn any ideas?

I don’t know many specifics about Austin, anymore. I do know it will be very hot!

East and south Austin are the hipper neighborhoods closer to downtown. East Austin has some dangerous neighborhoods but Cherrywood, French Place, and the area around Mueller are safe. I don’t know south as well but Travis Heights, Barton Hills, and Zilker are nice but expensive. Clarksville is also nice but likely expensive.

For safe, nice and reasonably convenient, he could look north of downtown in Crestview/Brentwood. There are fun places to go out all along Burnet Road. Northwest Hills is not as trendy but nice with good access to downtown. I’m not sure if there would be summer sublets, though.

I’d recommend he stay north of Ben White and south of 183 if he wants an easy commute.

^ Thanks

In addition to the areas @ultimom mentioned, Hyde Park and the UT area are worth considering. He might be able to find a summer sublet. In Northwest Hills, there are some apartments off Far West and Wood Hollow that are primarily occupied by students.

Should be plenty of sublets in student condos near UT. Easy commute.

^ great thanks!

I’m here too. @ultimom has some good suggestions. @rickle1 will your S have a car? Public transportation in Austin is hit or miss.

@cgpm59 He will have access to a car if he wants it. Has been told some do and some don’t but if he lives close enough could easily take the bus, metro, etc. The offer came with a stipend for car rental so it’s an option.

I’ve been hearing he should live as close to downtown as possible as that’s where he’ll spend all his time (office is downtown too). Lots of adds on FB (student sublets) are around UT. Is it realistic to live by West Campus and uber to night life? They say only a mile or two, but is that what most do? How about on the other side of the river? South Congress area?

Any of those areas should be fine. Yes, lots of Uber or Lyft for getting around. We also have the scooters that people rent through an app and ride around on. South Congress (anything south of the river) has lots of restaurants, bars, etc. but I’m not sure about living options. West Campus would be a good area as far as subletting.

^ Thanks!

Re: nightlife areas, my 27-year-old-sample-of-one says her age group and a little older mostly go to East Austin bars, while Rainey Street gets more of a college and bachelorette party crowd and Sixth Street attracts tourists and those looking to prey on tourists. YMMV. The metro doesn’t usually run late enough to be an option, and there can be a 45 minute wait between buses on some routes. Rental car and ride share would be best.

^thanks

does this advice still apply if i live in a different city?
