Anyone have experience with Jefferson West (west campus) and subleasing (in general)?

So my roommate and I are looking at living in Jefferson West this fall and the only thing we're worried about is having to sign the 12-month lease (we're from Dallas), we were told by the people who work there and our realtor that most people that don't live in their apt. during the summer sublease it. Obviously it's pretty much up to my roommate and I to find people so we were wondering how easy/difficult it is do this? Or how much of a hassle? Also, I've heard mixed reviews about jefferson west so if anyone has any input that would be help that'd be great! (Yes, I already know it's probably not gonna look like the model they showed us at ALL)

Our other option besides Jefferson West is this place called Century Apt. which I have not gone to see, but from google images doesn't look so great. However for the price I can deal with that, and it's a 10-month lease. Only thing is it's in north campus so a little far and there's crime, but I don't have a car/bike so I'm not extremely worried, more concerned about the distance from campus/activity than anything else. Heard about mixed/below avg reviews for this place as well.

My daughter lives there and sublet from another resident last summer. The glitch is that if your subletter is not staying through fall, they have to move out July 31, which is two weeks before summer school ends (which is a problem if they are subletting so they can attend summer school.) The other issue is that your subletter will be responsible for all damage, so they will probably want to have an agreement with you that you will pay for any damage you did. It was not difficult at all to sublet. We found several on Craigslist, and you can register with their office if you want to sublet.

As far as living there, it seems ok for college housing. Was a little disgusted by the elevator full of trash and urine in the hall that was not cleaned until Monday. (Girls in the office showed absolutely no concern at all that it wouldn’t be cleaned immediately.) But to be fair, this was right after finals and not an every-week occurrence. Great location, though, and seems relatively safe. She doesn’t have a car and walks to campus, often staying until the library closes (2am) before walking back alone. It’s West Campus - expensive and “active”. (Tip - get those foam earplugs - they work great!) Pretty good response for maintenance - all things you should consider when choosing a place. And consider the $1200-1400 extra you’d pay for two months if you can’t sublet vs. the entire cost of your education - $80-100,000.

I assume you found the reviews here: (outdated and few, but something)

If you do decide on Jeff West, carefully choose your room location, and walk by it. Ask lots of questions; some rooms are kind of in the basement, and some rooms don’t have windows. Try to get away from the pool, and walk around so you’ll know what your view will be out of your balcony.

I understand your pain; I’ve been looking for someplace else for my daughter next year and everywhere sounds lousy. But this place is pure luxury compared to my dorm room 30 years ago:) (W/D in apt., dishwasher, max 2 people per bathroom!)

Check out a realty group, I really like 512-Realty but there are a bunch of places around campus. They will help you figure out everything about the leasing process and will help you go and look at different apartments to find out what you want and what price range works for you.
