I am currently a college senior in some completely unrelated engineering major. My parents were very against me doing any performing arts when I started college … but I still haven’t give up, and I decide to save tuition through a full-time job next year while preparing to apply for master’s programs in MT/Acting. I don’t know how feasible that is but still want to give a try.
I am trained in dancing & singing, and did some theater in college. But I never had a chance to perform in a musical (the performing arts department in my school is like … nothing) and I feel the quickest way to get some experience is attending a summer intensive. I have one and a half month of break before I start my job in July … and there are not many programs out there for adults. I saw Joffrey’s MT summer accept students from 8 to 25 so I applied and got accepted. But I am concerning that most kids in the program (they probably dance better than me though) are very very young and learning experience for someone at my age will be not that good.
I am wondering if anyone in this forum know how this program is like could give me some suggestions. Also any suggestions for other summer programs for adults?
Thanks in advance.
I don’t know if this is what you’re looking for, but I know of 2 summer intensives that take college age:
The Performing Arts Project’s Panorama program is a 3-week summer intensive with training in acting, dancing, singing for students ages 16 to 25. They finished their regular auditions but the website says they may take late digital auditions.
Broadway Theatre Project takes ages 16 and up, including college age. Their deadline just passed too, but may take late applications.
Look into Boston Conservatory’s Musical Theater Dance Intensive (MTDI) ages 15 - 25. I’ve heard great things about this program. Video auditions open until June 1st, but call the make sure its not full. Its a 3 week intensive with training in dance, voice and acting. Good Luck!!!
NYU Steinhardt also has a 2 week summer program for ages 16 thru post-grad and professionals, application deadline 5-31.
I have no advice to give on programs. I just wanted to say follow your dreams!
This is why I am not pushing my daughter to anything else! I know she won’t be happy if she doesn’t pursue her dreams.
Thank you all for your great suggestions! I will look into all of those and continue researching. I would prefer to do a program in June so that I can begin working and saving money in July (every penny counts when you begin to save for your own tuition ), unless its a really great program that really worths it. The opportunity cost for me not working and leaving my room empty while still paying rent is just so high…
UNCSA has an amazing Commercial Dance Summer intensive- 2 weeks in June. The intensive focuses on dance, singing, and acting. It is run by Broadway star Elizabeth Parkinson and her faculty is stacked with other broadway performers. I think it would be a great program for you and you could get some honest feedback and direction while getting amazing training. My daughter attended last summer. There were students from 14 and up- some were college students.
@Copper2016 I do notice that they have a drama intensive but did not see this one! Looks super cool! Thank you so much!
