Hi! Does anyone know of any good intensive programs under 5 grand? If they are out of the state of Colorado they must include room and board. Thank you so much! I'd like to attend some before college to improve my chances, and I've done one so far but am not interested in going back because there was a lot of unprofessional behavior that I would prefer to avoid. I am a junior in highschool.

My D loved the BW Musical Theatre Overtures program. It is one week and within your price range.

I believe both Michigan and Ithaca’s programs were under $5000. (at least they were when my D applied two years ago) Both were 3 weeks, and included room and board. Caveat- both are VERY competitive for admission- you submit video for an audition. (good practice for prescreens next year)

Divamamacita I also just learned of Overtures and it looks like a good value but very exclusive. Only take 15 kids. But I like what looks like personal attention

The Penn State and Oklahoma City University summer programs are both well under $5000 for 2-3 weeks – $1840 at PSU, and OCU starts at $2500 (they have 2, 3 and 5 week offerings). Also, CSSSA, for anyone reading this thread from California, is $1500 for 4 weeks if you are in-state (unfortunately this doesn’t help OP). These are all audition programs. The Performing Arts Project is $3700 for 3 weeks. I’m sure there are others that are affordable-ish - I would concentrate on programs that are 1-3 weeks long, and in a less expensive area of the country (e.g., don’t even look at NYU’s summer program!).

Please verify all these costs. This is just what I have written down!

MPulse was $3500 last year. Interlochen has 1 wk, 3 wk and 6 wk programs and (obviously) a range of prices. I think the 3 week is around $3500 also…

The Interlochen 3-week summer workshop is $4935. The 1-week MT Audition intensive is $1115. Interlochen offers need-based financial aid and merit scholarships. MPulse is $3520 and also offers some need-based aid and merit scholarships. Again, both programs are audition-based.

CCM has a 2 week program which is about half your budget.

Something to pay attention to - some schools offer college credit as well. NYU, while comparatively expensive, (above parameter set by OP) includes 6 hours of credit. When we were looking, CMU and Northwestern were fairly close to the same price (also well above $5K) and did not include credit. For us, the credit was influential, esp since D ended up at NYU

That’s right, @elsacc. Now I recall that my S was offered a scholarship at Interlochen which made it comparable to MPulse and TPAP.

The issue with offering college credits is that in some cases, they would not necessarily be transferrable to another school.

Very true- but if is a top choice program (as it was for D) AND you are accepted, it made a nice bonus. With ap credits and summer credits she is already ranked as a sophomore.

Great thread - exactly the info I’ve been looking for. My daughter is a high school freshman. very serious in voice/musical theater. We are putting together her application for Interlochen’s 3 week musical theater workshop summer program. Has anyone done this? How difficult is it to get in? She has her goals set on NYU possibly for college. Thanks!

@SpartanDrew My D will probably apply to the Interlochen summer program, too. I don’t know how competitive it is. I think that the 9th grade applicants have a choice of the High School and the Intermediate programs, so maybe consider in advance if your D would be willing to accept the Intermediate program if that is what is offered. The two older girls we know from our area who have gone there are both exceptionally talented. I don’t know of anyone who was rejected, but people don’t tend to broadcast that. I do think that the price of these summer programs means that only a limited number of people will apply.

I would recommend having multiple options. Our plan is to submit video auditions for several programs - tentatively thinking Interlochen, OCU, PSU, CSSSA - and also to consider some programs that are based on application, essay and transcript, such as BUSTI (which is acting only, not MT). In past years, my D considered Stagedoor Manor and French Woods but didn’t end up applying. Those are also great non-audition options, although you have to apply very early for Stagedoor. There are also programs such as Broadway Artists Alliance, Broadway Dreams, and ArtsBridge’s new “Starter” program, as well as some excellent (and bargain) programs at regional theaters.

Maybe our Ds’ paths will cross this summer!

With NYU - grades and test scores will be as or more important than your audition. So make sure you allow time for special coaching you may need in these areas also if NYU is really the dream.

thanks elsacc. Are you in Michigan? I think we will also apply to UNC School of Arts in Wilmington for voice. My D has a fantastic voice (biased yes but I think she has the pipes to get in) and loves MT as well but has zero experience in dance so that should be interesting putting together a one minute dance bit Lol. I looked at Stagedoor, but given the price tag maybe next year. This summer she will be a rising sophomore so not sure if the intermediate would be appropriate. She is very mature for her age and I know would not want to be in with a group of younger kids. I also looked at one of the Broadway programs but it’s uber $$$ so again, maybe the summer after her sophomore year. Summer post junior year she is trying for NYU Tisch summer 8 week program and many of the others you mentioned. Did the older girls from your area do the 6 week MT program at INterlochen or the 3 week workshop?

@vvnstar Believe me I know on NYU academic excellence and have been drilling it into her. She has started her freshman year with straight A’s and is looking to test out for classes next year. We’ve just been through all of that with my son who’s a senior so she’s witnessed me micromanage him on ACT prep, grades etc.! haha!

I would definitely look at OCUs summer program. Incredible vocal training. Fabulous dance as well. One of the best summers of our D’s life. Her friends from that camp are now in many different MT programs in the country including CCM, Michigan,Pace, NYU, Elon, OCU, Coastal, Ball State and many more. knowing kids at each of those schools during audition season was a big perk. Made things a lot less scary!

@SpartanDrew We are in California, so kids in our area have the option of CSSSA, the summer program at Cal Arts, for 4 weeks for $1550 in-state tuition, if accepted. It is Acting with an MT elective class. A very good deal for California residents.

I agree with you about ruling out the Intermediate program at Interlochen if your D is mature and/or already has significant MT experience. One girl from our area did the 3-week HS program and loved it. I am not sure which program the other girl did.

I haven’t looked at the UNCSA summer program and did not know they offer Voice. For college, as you probably know, it is a straight acting program, although a number of its grads are successful MT performers.

If voice is your daughter’s greatest strength, I suggest you look at the Oklahoma City University summer program, if you haven’t already. They are a school known for both VP and MT, and their summer program price is more reasonable than some, and includes 2, 3 and 5 week options.

Summer after junior year is still a while from now and I don’t know if you have added up all the separate fees for the NYU summer program, but is over $10,000, just FYI. As another poster pointed out, though, you do get NYU credit and exposure to NYU, living in NYC, etc.

Thanks to you both. I will indeed look at OCU. Voice is absolutely her greatest strength but she loves acting and MT as well. I have added the expenses and yes NYU is a huge chunk of change. She gets a choice of a senior trip to Greece or THAT! Haha! Not both. I figure if she still wants NYU and is a rising senior with a good shot at getting in then it can only benefit her and would be worth the expense but that’s two years off. A lot can change in 2 years. If she doesn’t do NYU the we would likely look at MPulse or Carnegie Melon.
