Summer programs for high school student

I am not sure if this is posted somewhere else but I am looking for summer programs for my D for MT. She is a sophomore now and we want something for next summer. I have looked up Stagedoor, etc but she is hesitant about staying somewhere for 3 weeks overnight...Plus it is very expensive. Any thoughts from others? We are east coast.

The summer after sophomore year my daughter did Indiana University’s Midsummer Theater Program and loved it. (She was even on all their advertising this past year!). It’s a two week program and I believe the cost was around $1500 - including room & board.

This summer she ended up at Berklee’s Musical Theater Intensive. That was 5/6 days at at cost of around $2k.

The programs are VERY different - but she loved them both.

Search this forum. I think I remember there were programs in the NYC/New Jersey area that were day programs. I know there are quite a few threads about summer programs. Son attended a six week residential program, and it was transformative for him. Also allowed him to see what it would be like to be in a BFA program.

There is a pinned thread at the top of the page “summer big list” there are many good summer choices. Which area are you looking at? S went to CCM’s summer program, it was 2 weeks, he loved it.

I think the strongest programs for high schoolers interested in pursuing an MT degree in college are MPulse, TPAP and OCU. These are on college campuses, students take college-like classes and get a real feel for what studying MT in college may be like. Others that also come highly recommended are ArtsBridge, Texas MT Workshop, CCM and Indiana. northwestern Cherubs and CMU are good programs but are long and expensive. There are many others also. Im sure other posters will chime in with more good suggestions. You might check Broadway Artists Alliance and Destination Broadway. These are typically one week in NYC and may be a good introduction if you are looking for something shorter – but costs can be high. If you want more of a summer camp environment, consider Interlochen, Stagedoor and French Woods.
Our D went to both mPulse and OCU and would highly recommend both.

My daughter did two summers at Interlochen at the three week musical theatre workshop and just loved it. They do offer some financial aid, but even with that it is a big financial commitment.

Cherubs at nothwestern has the best training. I went there last summer and it was the best theatre experience of my life. I have done musical theatre all my life and it super pushed me and I am such a changed actress after it. I highly recommend it.

@vvnstar‌ Great list! I would just add BTP (Broadway Theatre Project) in Tampa FL. My D attended both BTP and TPAPin subsequent summers, and got a lot out of both!

My son did TPAP this year. The price made me wince a little… but it was WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! He learned more in those 3 weeks than in 3 yrs from our HS drama/music teachers.

Thanks for all the ideas. I need something east coast and we did Destination Broadway this summer. It was just one week but they did a lot in that time. Plus they had a visit from S Foster who is my D’s idol of course. I just want something more college oriented. Stage Door seems awesome but the expense is prohibitive. TPAP looks interesting MTmom2015, it is in NC right?

Yes, at Wake Forest University (although not directly affiliated with WFU, just housed there). They hold auditions all over the country… and I believe there are some need-based scholarships, too. They had some heavy hitters there as far as instructors… Steven Pasquale, Krysta Rodriquez, Susan Misner, Jonathan Grof (via Skype), etc. Visits from 8 or 9 colleges, too.

Penn State tweeted recently that they’ll have a summer program next year. I have no details.

My son loved the summer program at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He auditioned while there and was accepted for this fall. So three weeks later we took him back. (He was planning to take a gap year, but he abandoned his plans.) This summer was the first time students had to audition for the program. There were several commuter students in program.

Wright State and Northern Kentucky have summer programs. Don’t know anything about them, or whether or not they are residential.

Cap21 has a summer program: <a href=“404 | Molloy University: Affordable undergraduate and graduate degree programs at one of the top colleges in America.”>404 | Molloy University: Affordable undergraduate and graduate degree programs at one of the top colleges in America.;

Carnegie Mellon too: http://drama.cmu.edu/32

My son did TPAP this past summer and it was the best thing he could have done - inspirational, eye-opening, transformative. Highly recommended.

Stagedoor is wonderful but not college oriented. You might consider ArtsBridge.

^My D would agree!

Does anyone know anything about AMDA’s summer 2 week program? Looks like its non audition and is rather pricey. We know someone considering it but I have heard some not great things about the school in general…

I don’t think we’re allowed to copy/paste a link to other web sites, but I’ve heard people talk Savannah Summer Theatre Institute. They have two sessions and do a full production at the end of each. There’s also a tech program. Each session is limited to 20-25 students. I just googled their program—first session is at Hilton Head and the second is in Savannah. I’m not sure if they still have spots available for this summer, but you could contact them to see. Their price for 4 weeks is what AMDA’s is for just over 2 weeks.
