Summer Intern Housing

Hey,

I actually go to school in Pittsburgh, but I am interning this summer at the Google office in NYC. A friend pointed me to FIT housing, which is conveniently a very short walk from the office. Do any of you have experience or knowledge of the summer housing for interns at FIT?

The shared apartment rate looks very reasonable, and while I am certainly comforted that the campus is alcohol/substance free, I just turned 21 and switched from the Seattle office last summer to really try and get a feel for big city life.

My main concern is that with the rules there I will be boxing myself in to have a "cheap, but not so fun summer in NYC". 8 overnight visitors ($10/night) per month seems low, but manageable (there's only so many friday and saturday nights per 30 days) until I consider that I may have friends and family coming to visit and needing a place to stay. No drugs is a non-issue, but with no alcohol / medium size (21+) get-togethers, will I still be able to find enough fun things to do in the area that won't break my wallet?

also fwiw, I am a straight male, and I mention only because I know the area is very gay-friendly. I have gay friends and am accepting, but I don't exactly gravitate to the gay scene.

One last note is that I will have about 20 good friends in or around the city this summer. I'm thinking maybe I'll be able to escape and hang out with them when I need to, but I'll also have the safety of this place when I need it. Again though, I feel I risk being the guy who just shows up to everything and never invites anybody over.

If you made it this far, I'd love to hear your input :D

Anyone know anything about the area, the housing? etc?
