Summer Intern

I'm looking for an internship (or other program) from June to July, hopefully something that will improve my chances of admission. Any suggestions are appreciated =D

any interests?

I don't know what is available where you live. Most of the good internships around here are taken by now. There are probably volunteer possibilities, however.

And, yes, as surburbian suggested, it would help to know your interests. Doing something just to look good to colleges is pretty useless.

FInd a volunteer position. There are lots and they can carry as much respect as a formal internship. My D is volunteering/interning at City Hall this summer.

The zoo, museums, red cross, summer camps, SPCAs, shelters, senior centers, all kinds of stuff to do...

Dont' do something for a college. THat will be obvious, especially if it isn't one of your passions.

What do you like and what have ytou done?

I can go to any intern in CA. I'm interested in many things, mainly medical and architecture. Any intern is fine, since I haven't decided a major yet.

My school requires every senior to do an internship in May and June. They have a 3-4 page list (for a class size of 94) of business, law firms, etc. that are interested in having a high school intern. Most of them are community members or friends and family members of the students' parents. So our school has a pretty organized system. You list your personal or career interests, and they match you up someone. It's really only available to seniors, and during a certain time, though.

By the way, why is this question on the financial aid and scholarships thread?

When I was looking for internships in the early spring, I was also looking for medical internships. There are several internship programs for high school students. There was a genomics project at Cornell that I really wanted to do, but I wouldn't be able to do that for the entire length of the program. I don't know if the deadline already passed, though; it probably did. I was googling science internships and medical internships, and I came across another internship list from some high school. The list had links to the individual internship web sites. Try finding one of those.

I've been searching, and it's quite unsuccessful. Could you give me the link for the list?
btw, thx for responding =D

hey try NIH. its very competitive but they have a stipend and such. you do meaningful project-oriented work under a mentor so its more like a mentorship not an internship.

i will be working at NRL over the summer(Naval Research Laboratory) working on computational physics and i receive a stipend as well.

bottom line is dc/metro area is great for research opportunities for motivated and excelling students(high school juniors and college students).

Any internships that are listing on the internet have most likely passed their deadlines. The majority of major internships have their deadlines between February and May because the applications have to go through a selection committee in time for the summer.

Your best bet is at local businesses, firms, hospitals, etc. Do some research on local places and walk in dressed semi-casual/professional with a resume and cover letter. Let them know you are interested in any availible internship positions and ask them to give your resume a look over. Your goal is to impress them with your initiative and demeanor. Don't call them before hand...you will just be giving them a chance to say no before you have a chance to impress them.

If you don't get any callbacks go volunteer anywhere that grabs your interest.

thanks for the advice

try to get a hook at the prominent law office or private medical practictioner. you could maybe even ask your own personal doctors if they need any help with paper filing, inventory stocking, etc.

NIH's deadline passed a while ago, most paid internships, and even unpaid ones, have deadlines that have passed
