I am currently a Haas-intended Freshman at Berkeley. I have heard that firms such as Deutsche Bank offer overseas programs of internships in the summer. Are these internship possible for an upcoming sophomore without formal business training? If so, are these internships a good way to possibly prepare for I-banking?

I am interested in overseas summer internships too. Is it possible for sophomores at US targets to intern in IBD/S&T in places like Singapore, HK etc? Do the majority of interns in those office come from local/regional schools, or from US target schools? Will going to a US target be of any advantage when applying for internships in these countries?

bump~~~~~~

Unless your dad's an MD or a major client, there will be virtually no jobs for freshmen this year.

I have heard that there are no internships for rising college sophomores. Is there any internship opportunity (Deutsche Bank) available for rising college juniors from HYP?

Every bank I know of is still doing some hiring. My own large bank will be hiring rising seniors for summer internships as I believe most will. I do believe the competition among those interns for offers will be brutal as it was this year.

Would you advise a student to take a summer internship opportunity in Washington DC? The internship offer may be made from a nationally eminent level economist who is in current president elect economic team? Student has interned in past with the economist. Mentor has mentioned that the student could expect an opportunity. So far, no formal offer has been made. Problem is student has a standing offer from an investment bank where he worked last year. He needs to tell them in case he gets this opportunity. If student decline this investment offer, we are wondering what will happen for future employment with the firm. Pay difference is also huge for summer opportunity. On other hand, the internship offer will allow student to work very closely on some very important current economic issues.

If your student wants a full time job with the bank, he needs to take the summer internship. This year it's likely that all the hiring will be done from the ranks of the summer interns, and they will compete for what full time offers there will be.
